MusicMonday - Some of the greatest rock covers ever

in Music3 years ago

Some songs are just so great that it doesn't matter whether you are a garage band playing on pubs Wednesday night or a rock n' roll legend packing stadiums, you are gonna cover them. Here are some of the greatest rock covers, in my humble opinion of course.

To try and keep less messy, I'll only link the cover video, but I'll mention the original artist so you won't have any trouble looking it up.

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

Let's kick things off with this powerful rendition by one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived. Hendrix did such a great job with this song that Bob Dylan, the original composer, says that when he sings it nowadays he can't help but feel it's a tribute to Jimi. Incredible!

A Change is Gonna Come - Greta Van Fleet

Greta Van Fleet is a very young band that divides the opinions of many people. You either love them for their raw talent and classically inspired rock and roll tunes or you hate them because they "sound too much like Zep". (I'm a huge Zep fan and I don't care what people say. To me Greta is a great band). Either way, I think they did a great job on Sam Cooke's 1964 hit.

Hurt - Johnny Cash

This one surprised a lot of people when it came out. Who would have guessed that the country legend, Johnny Cash, would ever cover a song by the modern rock band Nine Inch Nails? Well, he did, and the result is just incredible! Cash put so much feeling in this song with that powerful voice of his! With all due respect to the original creators, but to me, this is the ultimate version of this beautiful song.

How deep is your love - John Frusciante

Ok. This very interesting live version of the Bee Gee's famous hit was not actually released as a full song so it's in the gray zone. I'll give you that. However, John Frusciante is such a complete musician - and one of my favorite guitar players - that I just couldn't leave him out. This was just a couple of minutes between songs in a RHCP concert but it was all it took for Frusciante to show him all his talent and to drive the crowd crazy!

The man who sold the world - Nirvana

This is one of the highlights of a concert that was one of the greatest in Nirvana's history and also in the history of the MTV Unplugged concerts. Kurt Cobain's sharp voice cuts the atmosphere of this song like nothing else could. It's quite a challenge to cover the great work of David Bowie, but Nirvana did it wonderfully in this masterpiece.

That's it for now, but, as I was writing this post I realized that there are MANY more great covers that would easily make this list. I didn't want to make it too long so people can actually listen carefully to these but I'm definitely coming out with a part 2 soon!

Let me know what you think of my list and also what other rock covers would you mention. Keep on rocking!
