Movies and Sounds: Underworld vs Trainspotting

in Music5 days ago

Underworld - Born Slippy! THE electronic music project from the UK!

As a German growing up with Metal and the early days of Techno I am still addicted to both styles - even tried to do crossover projects "Metal and Techno" - not successful - we Germans still think we invented Techno. Might be not entirely correct, think the heritage is Detroit around its House scene - but in Germany the movement became probably real popular amongst our folks with highlights such as Love Parade in Berlin and all these clubs and DJS around Berlin and Frankfurt mainly.

So we always tried to defend our Techno turf a bit - shit nationalism :-) - but it did not take long to find out that there are so many great DJs from other areas such as UK (Carl Cox), Belgium (tooo many to mention), Netherlands (too many to mention) and others.

One project that always comes to my mind as a pioneer of that music is from the UK (I learned about this song being cover sound of a strange movie called "Trainspotting" - an interesting movie around drug abuse in England).

I was shocked watching it but what I never will forget is the music around it by these guys - the song was original a "B-Side" only of another track (B-Side comes bacl to vinyl record before digital sounds, internet and such was create - you had a single (usually 45 inches) with two sides of the disk. While being famous because of that movie the lyrics have been misinterpreted as a hedonistic celebration of drinking, but actually it was written to be a "cry for help".

If you check the line up of music artists here you realize heroes included (such as New Order, Brian Eno to name a few):

Underworld has been founded back in 1987 actually in Wales - started as funk and synthi project as many these days - just saying Depeche Mode for example.

I know that @steevc and even @slobberchops or @revise-sociology might not be fans of Techno but still wanna hear their views about these guys - I see them as a link (like Kraftwerk in Germany) from Synthi bands such as Depeche Mode / Yazoo / Visage towards Techno - Underworld being still closer to their origins though.

The cool thing - I personally only know them about this song but these guys are still active, they perform live and this song as one of only a few I will never forget - a legend for Techno or electronic music.

If you are interested in the movie please read here (there been two version as well as the title song was re-versioned): (Wikipedia): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trainspotting_(film)

The film is iconic, and the music is even better.
Yes, Underworld is still going and performing. They released a new album in October. I mentioned them in Newtunes 8.11.2024.
The song Techno Shinkansen is in the Trainspotting style.

Trainspotting was cult and awesome in 1996. Even my dad watched it.

Born Slippy.., well I like quiet parts with that keyboard.., but the rest of it.., not for me. It was an iconic piece of music in Trainspotting tho.., it the nail on the head.

It's an iconic tune. I don't mind it, but it's not what I would generally listen to for fun. It's interesting in not really having much tune or chords as it's mostly a beat. I get that is all some people want.

you had a single (usually 45 inches)

Er, they were 7" and spun at 45 rpm.

No lager, but we have !BEER
