Carlos Reisch - the consequence in the progression of jazz.
It would be presumptuous to claim here and now that Carlos Reisch has entered new territory with the fusion of jazz and hip-hop. A look back to the year 1992 leads us to none other than Miles Davis, who already took this path at that time and testified to it with the album “Doo-Bop”. The traditionalists among Miles' followers threw their hands up in horror, which didn't bother the old master much, because he reinterpreted jazz for himself with almost every album.

Es wäre vermessen, hier und jetzt zu behaupten, Carlos Reisch hätte mit der Fusion von Jazz und Hip-Hop Neuland betreten. Ein Blick zurück in das Jahr 1992 führt uns zu keinem Geringerem, als zu Miles Davis, der bereits damals diesen Weg einschlug und dies mit dem Album “Doo-Bop” bezeugte. Die Traditionalisten unter den Miles-Anhängern schlugen entsetzt die Hände über dem Kopf zusammen, was den Altmeister wenig juckte, weil dieser den Jazz mit beinahe jedem Album neu für sich interpretierte.
The band name Carlos Reisch, because originating from Nuremberg, is composed of the first name of Carlos Santana and the last name of the former Nuremberg footballer Stefan Reisch. The band started in 2004 with a classical instrumental trio on the jazz stage. But over the years, the number of members kept growing, which led to the fact that in 2008 the formation consisted of ten musicians. Today, depending on the performance and commitment, it can be twenty.
Der Bandname Carlos Reisch, weil aus Nürnberg stammend, setzt sich zusammen aus dem Vornamen von Carlos Santana und dem Nachnamen des ehemaligen Nürnberger Fußballers Stefan Reisch. Die Band startete 2004 mit einem klassischen Instrumental-Trio auf der Jazz-Bühne. Doch mit den Jahren wuchs die Zahl der Mitglieder immer weiter an, was dazu führte, dass 2008 die Formation aus zehn Musikern bestand. Heute, je nach Auftritt und Engagement, können es zwanzig sein.
It's probably indisputable when I say that organizers of jazz events are much more likely to use bands that bring no more than five musicians on stage. The reason for this is simply the question of cost. For a hundred euros a head, a good jazz musician won't even pick up his instrument. So larger formations absolutely have to attract a lot of attention to be considered for the line-up at a festival.
Es ist wohl unbestritten, wenn ich die These vertrete, Veranstalter von Jazz-Events viel eher auf Bands zugreifen, die nicht mehr als fünf Musiker mit auf die Bühne bringen. Der Grund dafür ist schlicht und einfach die Kostenfrage. Für hundert Euro pro Kopf nimmt ein guter Jazzer noch nicht einmal sein Instrument in die Hand. So müssen größere Formationen unbedingt viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich lenken, um bei der Besetzung eines Festivals berücksichtigt zu werden.
Carlos Reisch managed to do this when they were immortalized on one of the famous Mercedes-Benz mix tapes. This was followed by orders from Sony and several other companies, who used the music for their advertising. The band itself characterizes their style like this: Franconian (genteel) reservation paired with Latin American effortlessness and lightness.

Daraufhin folgten Aufträge von Sony und einigen anderen Firmen, die die Musik für ihre Werbung verwendeten. Die Band selbst charakterisiert ihren Stil so: fränkisches (vornehme) Zurückhaltung gepaart mit lateinamerikanischer Mühelosigkeit und Leichtigkeit.

Die Band bediente sich wohl dieses Wortspiels, weil es sich so schön anbot. Ich steckte sie in die Hip-Hop-Ecke – und dort scheinen sie mir auch gut aufgehoben.
