Jazz-Matinee – Robin McKelle

in Musiclast year

The soul voice that feels comfortable in jazz.

Asked about the artists who have influenced her the most, Robin McKelle once answered: Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Donny Hathaway. So it's hardly surprising that soul and jazz are united in one voice. Born in Rochester 1976, it can be safely assumed that Robin McKelle's musical best days are yet to come.

Although originally classically trained on the piano and flugelhorn, she switched to the genre of jazz at an early age. This was probably due to the fact that the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra and Nancy Wilson was part of the permanent repertoire in the Kelle house. She completed her music studies in Boston, where she also earned some extra money as a background singer. She promptly won the „Thelonius Monk Vocal Jazz Competition“ in 2004.

Getting into the business with the big names in the industry. She worked with George Duke, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Don Grusin and Michael McDonald, to name a few.
She earned the designation as the coming diva of jazz not only as the lead singer of the Boston Pops Orchestra, but her step from the background to the front of the microphone. In 2006, her first album „Introducing Robin McKelle“ was released. This was immediately followed by „Modern Antique“, on which she reinterpreted classics in a big band sound.

She herself described the beginning of her solo career as follows: „I recorded a few demo tapes and they landed on the desk of Cheap Lullaby Records. The first album was released very quickly. I toured all over the world, playing bigger and bigger venues thanks to my first two albums. Maybe it was a little too fast to find myself, but I don't regret it.“

But McKelle no longer wants to remain on the big band track and in 2010, with the album „Mess Around“, she dresses up cover versions of Leonard Cohen, the Beatles or even the Bee Gees in a jazz-soul garment. Among other things, she presents an incredibly good version of the classic „Cry Me A River“ on this record. She is musically supported by none other than Fred Wesley, the trombonist of the James Brown Band.

In 2012, cover versions are also a thing of the past because with the album "Soul Flower" she not only introduces her new band, "The Flytones", but also impresses as a songwriter. She describes it as follows: "People accept the change as they see it as natural. I can express my personality much better in soul jazz. It's like a kind of liberation. It was a risk, but I don't like staying in the status quo."
