Lee Ritenour - Captain Fingers on the 6-String

in Music3 years ago

Nearly 50 years of music - without giving boredom a chance!

With Lee Ritenour, I introduce you to a guitarist who has experimented with just about every musical style in his long career.
Born on 11 January 1952 in Los Angeles, it took him exactly 16 years to get his first job in a music studio, where he recorded one of the albums by the Mamas & Papas. Since that collaboration, he has also been known by his nickname Captain Fingers, which was awarded to him because of his masterful guitar playing.

Ritenour's first attempts to go his own musical way began in 1976 with the album First Course, followed by Captain Fingers (1970) and The Captain’s Journey (1978) - which all belong in the jazz funk genre. In 1979, Pink Floyd asked him into the studio to record The Wall.
A year later, he made the switch to classic jazz by teaming up with keyboardist Dave Grusin to record and produce the album Harlequin for GRP Records.

Ritenours erste Versuche, musikalisch eigene Wege zu gehen, begannen 1976 mit dem Album First Course, gefolgt von Captain Fingers (1970) und The Captain’s Journey (1978) - alle dem Jazz-Funk zuzuordnen. 1979 baten ihn Pink Floyd ins Studio, um The Wall einzuspielen.

While the subsequent albums Festival and Color Rit can be described as excursions into smooth jazz marked by Brazilian influences, Stolen Moments finally marked a return to the jazz stage. Ernie Watts (sax), Alan Broadbent (piano), John Patitucci (acoustic guitar) and Harvey Mason (drums) were responsible for this.

It was around 1990 that Lee Ritenour set off into a completely different dimension of jazz. Nathan East, Bob James, Chuk Loeb, Harvey Mason, Larry Carlton and Rittenour joined up and Fourplay was born! The albums Wes Bound and Between The Sheets are an essential part of jazz history.

In an astonishing career that has now covered five decades and spawned over 40 solo albums, Ritenour has developed a keen understanding of how to create the right balance between a frontman and his rhythm section, but also between seasoned hands and enthusiastic up-and-coming musicians. On his new album Rhythm Sessions, he has surrounded himself with a cadre of high-profile veterans and promising newcomers - and they all make it clear, what a vital role the rhythm section plays in every conceivable musical context.

Stand up and finally stand for what you feel is right. A fitting conclusion to all the different information that has been pouring down on us lately.

Great post!
I particularly like "Night Rhythms": Lee Ritenour (guitar), Ernie Watts (tenor sax), Dave Grusin (keyboards), Marcus Miller (electric bass), Omar Hakim (drums) and Carlinhos Brown (percussion). From the album Festival (1988).

Happy Sunday! 😀

My problem when writing the post was, that it' s very difficult to decide when it comes to choosing titles.
