Playing the percussion instruments approaching perfection
One information right from the start: Martin Grubinger is one of the world's best instrumentalists on the marimba.
Before the question remains, what on this planet is a marimba, I can promise, that at the end of this article each of you will know very well, what kind of percussion instrument it is.
But before the instrument and the sounds that can be elicited from it, I will introduce you to the man who belongs to the absolute world class as a percussionist.
Born in 1983 in Salzburg, Grubinger came into contact with percussion quite early, as his father, a teacher at the Mozarteum, is himself a percussionist. He completed his studies at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and later at the Mozarteum. Basically, at that time, all his creative work seemed to be fixated on classical music.

Eine Information gleich vorab: Martin Grubinger ist einer der weltbesten Instrumentalisten am Marimbafon.
Bevor nun die Frage quer im Raum stehen bleibt, was in aller Welt wohl ein Marimbafon ist, kann ich versprechen, dass am Ende dieses Beitrags jeder von euch sehr wohl weiß, um welches Schlaginstrument es sich hierbei handelt.
Doch vor dem Instrument und den Tönen, die ihm entlockt werden können, stelle ich euch den Mann vor, der als Perkussionist zur absoluten Weltklasse gehört.
Der 1983 in Salzburg geborene Grubinger kam recht früh in Kontakt mit den Perkussionen, da sein Vater, ein Lehrer am Mozarteum, selbst Schlagzeuger ist. Sein Studium absolvierte er am Bruckner-Konservatorium in Linz und später am Mozarteum. Im Grunde genommen schien zu jener Zeit all sein Schaffen auf die Klassik fixiert zu sein.
This is evidenced by invitations to the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He celebrated sensational successes at the festivals in Baden-Baden, Bregenz, Salzburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
But in 2006, for the first time, there was movement in the music repertoire - at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, when he presented his project "The Percussive Planet".
Not, as perhaps expected, integrated into a concert, no, it became a 7-hour drum marathon. The Showdown at Vienna followed in the same year, which turned out to be no less short.

Doch 2006 kam erstmals Bewegung in das musikalische Repertoire - und zwar beim Beethovenfest in Bonn, als er sein Projekt »The Percussive Planet« vorstellte.
Nicht, wie vielleicht erwartet, eingebunden in ein Konzert, nein, es wurde ein 7-stündiger Schlagzeugmarathon. Noch im selben Jahr folgte der Showdown at Vienna, der nicht minder kurz ausfiel.
After these highly acclaimed performances, it was probably only logical, that from then on, the journey from classical music to cross-over in jazz took its course.
The best opportunity for this was the Music Discovery Project 2010 in Frankfurt's Jahrhunderthalle, where Grubinger made his debut with the HR Symphony Orchestra, the hip-hoppers from Blumentopf and Hila Bronstein.
Bringing Joseph Erich "Joe" Zawinul's "Birdland" on stage with his "The Percussive Planet" was bound to happen, when two Austrians in a class of their own, know how to complement each other.
Nach diesen viel umjubelten Auftritten war es wohl lediglich der Logik folgend, dass sich ab dann der Weg von der Klassik zum Cross-over anbahnte.
Hierfür bot sich als beste Gelegenheit das Music Discovery Projekt 2010 in der Frankfurter Jahrhunderthalle an, wo Grubinger mit dem HR-Sinfonieorchester, den Hip-Hoppern von Blumentopf und Hila Bronstein seinen Einstand gab.
Mit seinem »The Percussive Planet« das Birdland von Joseph Erich “Joe” Zawinul auf die Bühne zu bringen, konnte nicht ausbleiben, wenn zwei Österreicher der Extraklasse sich zu ergänzen wissen.
What followed, was a short-term return to classical music, as Bruno Hartl (principal timpanist at the Vienna Philharmonic) had composed the concerto for marimba, 4 timpani, percussion and orchestra for Martin Grubinger. The premiere in Salzburg was followed by another concert in Vienna in 2011.
Directly afterwards, his career led him not only back to jazz, but also to the Rheingau Music Festival in Mainz, where he again performed new compositions and arrangements with "The Percussive Planet". Among others, an exciting version of Ibrahim Maalouf's Beirut.
Was folgte, war eine kurzzeitige Rückkehr in die Klassik, da Bruno Hartl (Solo-Pauker an der Wiener Philharmonie) das Konzert für Marimbaphon, 4 Pauken, Percussion und Orchester für ihn komponierte hatte. Der Uraufführung in Salzburg folgte ein weiteres Konzert 2011 in Wien.
Direkt im Anschluss fühte ihn sein Weg nicht nur zurück zum Jazz, sondern auch zum Rheingau Musik Festival in Mainz, wo er wieder mit dem »The Percussive Planet« neue Kompositionen und Arrangements zum Besten gab. Unter anderem eine spannende Version von Ibrahim Maaloufs "Beirut".
For those, who have not yet been able to enjoy Beethoven's Fidelio live and in colour on the screen or surrounded by the sound boxes at home, here is a tiny glimpse into the temperament of Leonore, who is firmly convinced, that her beloved Florestan is still alive and accordingly resolutely begins her search for him - disguised as Fidelio.
