Who are these four Canadians who make up Monkey House and are responsible for this extraordinary crossover?
As there are: Singer/songwriter/keyboardist Don Breithaupt, drummer Mark Kelso, bassist Pat Kilbride and guitarist Justin Abedin.
It seems to me that it is the group's good sense for melodies and outstanding musicianship that earn them so much recognition and critical praise.

Als da wären: Sänger/Songwriter/Keyboarder Don Breithaupt, Schlagzeuger Mark Kelso, Bassist Pat Kilbride und Gitarrist Justin Abedin.
Es scheint mir, als sei es das gute Gespür für Melodien und die herausragende Musikalität der Gruppe, die der Gruppe so viel Anerkennung und Lob bei den Kritikern verschaffen.
It is rather unusual that a band with the same line-up has been delivering top quality for 25 years in a row.
The head of Monkey House, Don Breithaupt, if he can be called that, put it this way: “Having worked with Justin, Pat and Mark for so long, I have a good sense of what they're good at. I can play to their strengths, I can take a Polaroid of something in my studio and have a pretty good idea of how it's going to turn out if the band sticks with it.”

The cover of Book of Liars confirms my feeling that Monkey House love to borrow from the brilliant compositions of Steely Dan.
The explanation from the band: “As lifelong Steely Dan fans, Walter's death (author's note - Walter Becker, one of the two members of Steely Dan) hit us hard. We thought it would be a nice gesture to play one of his songs.”
Mein Gefühl, dass sich Monkey House liebend gerne an die genialen Kompositionen von Steely Dan anlehnen, bestätigt das Cover von Book of Liars.
Die Erklärung aus Kreisen der Band: „Als lebenslanger Steely Dan-Fan haben uns Walters Tod (Anmerkung vom Autor - Walter Becker, einer der beiden Mitglieder von Steely Dan) schwer getroffen. Wir dachten, es wäre eine nette Geste, einen seiner Songs zu spielen.“
But no matter where they take their cues, from The Police or XTC, blues or R&B, in the end you can still hear Monkey House.
What is particularly striking about the productions is the number of prominent guest musicians who show up in the studio for the recordings.

So it's no surprise that the audience that Monkey House knows how to attract in front of the stage is getting bigger and bigger. Dan Breithaupt says: “It means I can afford the luxury of putting the band at the top of my work pile where it belongs and I can take the time to try and make each record better than the last.”
