Three Tune Tree Tuesday! December 6

in Musiclast year

It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.

I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and an old wind up phonograph that Uncle is using to play some songs.

Also, in honour of @old-guy-photos' #treetuesday, I am offering photos of three trees! #ThreeTuneTreeTuesday! Booya!

(notice the absence of decorations on the bottom of that tree; that is by design to allow the cats a foothold before they start scaling the inside of the tree)

Silent Night

Our first song tonight is Silent Night by Frieda Hempel, a German soprano. She was an opera singer (as many of the famous singers were of the day) in the early 20th century who made a good name for herself in both Europe and the United States.

The Holy City

The second song this week is fun for me in the sense that this is the first time I have used this particular phonograph as part of #ttt. The Standard Talking Machine Company existed as an entity from 1901-1918. Mostly it sold re-branded Columbia phonographs and re-labelled Columbia records. The primary difference between Standard and the other "needle cut" phonographs of the day was that the center spindle on the Standard's turntable was larger than the others, making playing them on non-Standard equipment difficult.

I have not been able to find much information about this particular song. The label indicates that it is "Number 60" and, considering I have the record labelled "Number 123" and know it is from 1901, I'm going to go on a limb and suggest that this song - The Holy City - was also produced in 1901.

So this red tree might be cheating for Tree Tuesday. It's a little tinsel tree sitting atop my Brunswick phonograph. But it's cute.

Cantique de Noel

The final Christmas themed song this week is Cantique de Noel, sung by Enrico Caruso in 1915. Caruso was also an opera singer, very famous for the role of Canio and the opera Pagliacci. This song is absolutely magnificent.

Three Tune Tuesday (TTT) is initiated by @ablaze.

I run a live stream of my TTT songs every Tuesday at 12:00pm EDT, then take that stream and share the songs from it here, on Hive, on Wednesday (or occasionally Thursday). These songs are all old pre-1923 78rpm records from my collection, played on my antique phonographs and recorded with a well placed microphone. Like what you hear? Come listen live!
