Salsa has many currents and diverse representatives, each with their own style and impact on different segments of the population. However, there are those who manage to reach a much broader audience, breaking through regular segmentations.
One of those who achieved the greatest reach is Rubén Blades, a Panamanian singer-songwriter who has become a true milestone within Caribbean music.
While his primary achievement is having created a type of "social salsa," where he touches on the most common themes and problems of Latin American neighborhoods, he doesn't always limit himself to that kind of content; he has also written many songs that are closer to the "flaws" of the Latino man.
Buscando Guayaba is one of them, and it refers to the search for "that certain something" that only a woman can offer. This song was an absolute boom and one of the great mega-hits from the Rubén Blades - Willie Colón duo.
It is a song that, even after almost 50 years, remains a mandatory track in the salsa repertoire of any DJ or dance orchestra.
Today, for a change, I am reviving this song once again, but this time accompanied only by the cuatro. I've included the "mouth solo"—though not the original one, as I don't know it by heart—but I didn't want to leave it out. Definitely, the hardest part is performing both the chorus and the soneos (improvisations) alone, but I had enough breath to make it to the end, which is a good sign... 😁

La salsa tiene muchas corrientes y representantes diversos, cada uno con su estilo propio y cada quien tiene un impacto sobre distintas partes de la población. Sin embargo, hay quienes logran llegar a un público más extenso, rompiendo con algunos de las segmentaciones regulares.
Uno de esos que logró unos de los mayores alcances es Rubén Blades, cantautor panameño que se ha convertido en todo un hito dentro de la música caribeña.
Aunque su principal logro es haber creado un tipo de "salsa social", en la que toca los temas y problemas más comunes de las barriadas latinoamericanas, no siempre se limita a contenido de esa índole y ha tenido muchos temas que están más cerca de los "defectos" del hombre latino.
Buscando Guayaba es uno de ellos y a lo que se refiere es a la búsqueda de "aquello" que solo una mujer puede ofrecer. Esta canción fue un boom total y uno de los grandes megaéxitos de la dupla Rubén Blades - Willie Colón.

Hoy, para variar, vuelvo a revivir esta canción, pero ahora solo con el acompañamiento del cuatro. Está incluido el "solo de boca", aunque no el original, pues no me lo sé de memoria, pero no quise dejarlo por fuera. Definitivamente, la parte más difícil es la de hacer el coro y los soneos uno solo, pero el aire me alcanzó para llegar al final, lo cual es una buena señal… 😁
