Sweet UI, but even tho it's FOSS, I bet they are relying on a centralized company server which holds all of those images and metadata etc. Worse yet, they might even rely on a third-party api from imdb or wikimedia etc. However, if they use an open, distributed db for all of that, then man the world has a killer app right there.
Kinda like google maps vs OpenStreetMaps (OSM).

It does scrape a lot from IMBD but there are open source options you can have it pull from.
Even the closed captions and live tv guides come from home brewed places.
They just have the imbd stuff as default for the ease of use in it's api and it's an easy set up for those who dont know anything about tech stuff.
But yes the other options are available although they are harder to set up correctly.

There a ton of plugins written for it and thats where you change all that stuff. As with most stuff like this though you have search for the plugins cause they are not all "offical" so they arent listed in the repos.
