Today, while walking through a peaceful village area, I came across a beautiful and fruitful Kathal tree, also known as the Jackfruit tree. The sight instantly caught my attention — the tree was tall, strong, and filled with large, green jackfruits hanging from its branches and even growing from the trunk. It was one of the most beautiful natural sights I have seen in a while. There was something very special about the way the fruits were growing in abundance, making the entire tree look like it was full of life and richness. The tree stood like a symbol of nature’s generosity, silently offering its gift to those who notice and value it.

Kathal, or jackfruit, is one of the most important pahadi (mountain) vegetables in many regions, especially in places like Uttarakhand. It grows well in the tropical climate of the hills and is known for its large size, spiky green skin, and soft, flavorful flesh inside. The jackfruit tree I saw today reminded me of the strong connection between nature and health. This fruit is not just delicious but also full of nutrients that are very beneficial for our bodies. It is rich in fiber, vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants. In mountain areas, people often cook kathal as a dry sabzi or curry, and it tastes amazing when prepared with traditional spices.

What amazed me most was the way the jackfruits were growing from almost every part of the tree — from the main trunk to the lower branches. Each fruit looked fresh, raw, and full of potential. Some were still small and growing, while others were already quite big and ready for harvest. I stood under the tree for a while, just admiring its beauty. The sunlight passing through the leaves, the slight wind making the branches sway, and the green fruits hanging like ornaments made the scene feel magical. It was a reminder that nature has so much to offer if we just pause and look around.

In traditional mountain homes, the kathal tree is seen as a valuable gift. People wait for the season when the tree is full of fruit so they can prepare tasty dishes for their families. Some people even dry the kathal or pickle it for later use. It is especially loved because it is filling, full of taste, and can be used in many different ways. Jackfruit is also considered a good meat substitute by many vegetarians because of its texture. It is soft when ripe and firm when raw — making it perfect for both sweet and savory dishes.
Seeing such a healthy tree filled with fruits made me appreciate how important it is to protect our environment and plant more trees like this. Trees like the kathal not only give us food but also help in keeping the air clean, providing shade, and supporting local wildlife. They are deeply connected to the local culture and food habits of the people living in the hills.
My short encounter with this majestic jackfruit tree left a deep impression on me. It was not just a tree — it was a source of food, tradition, and natural beauty. Moments like this make me feel grateful for the simple things in life and the silent wonders of nature. I hope more people begin to notice and value such trees in their surroundings. The kathal tree, in all its beauty and usefulness, truly stands as a reminder of the richness of our natural world.
