On the third day at the resort we almost slept through breakfast. It took so long for my daughter to wake up that we had to gently force her out of the cabin. She was so grumpy and didn't want to go, you know how sometimes kids get in that crabby mood.
When we did manage to get ready and come to breakfast, our observant waiters noticed that the child is not in the mood, they right away brought and put a small seashell on the table. Then something funny that no one expected happened, the shell got legs and began to move. So then we realized that was a little crab.
My daughter got a big smile and began to play with her new pet. The same worker brought a small plastic bottle cut in half with sand for the crab. My princess named the crab Bella. She put grass and flowers in the bottle.
I didn't understand who and at what point brought a large crab of a different kind in a different bottle, but the kids were so excited and named the second crab Barney. He was considered my son's pet.
Soon my son felt sorry for the crab, the bottle was too small for him and my son let the crab go free. I was very happy that the child could empathize with animals.
At first we let him go on the gravel by our cabin but then thought he needed to be closer to the sea, since he is a sea crab.
My daughter, on the other hand, didn't want to part with her baby crab and put another bigger seashell in her bottle. So we left Bella in the room and went either to the beach or for a walk.
When we got to the room we found the little shell was empty and we were about to get worried when suddenly the bigger shell started moving and we realized that Bella had moved into the bigger shell.
There is more room in that shell and she can hide there completely, so you can't even see her there. My daughter was proud of herself for giving the crab a second home. I should add here how before I showed the kids a video from bbc news, about the season when crabs swap shells/homes as they grow and need to find a new shelter. Apparently that got the little one thinking that we should have a spare shell. All of our family was excited for Bella's new house. As it turned out later, Bella was not a crab, but a hermit crab. Here, of course, in different languages the name may be different. My daughter was so happy and grateful to me for making her go to breakfast.
