Life under Lockdown in Auckland New Zealand.

It seems so long ago that we were Covid free and the word lockdown was not even a word we used or understood. In March 2020 New Zealand went into total lockdown
I recorded a series of images to remember this time as it felt like the end of the world.

A normally very busy inner city street-very weird to see it empty.

These first storey apartment dwellers had to improvise to dry laundry with no where else to dry it -the laundromat down the street was shut.

This normally busy pedestrian and busway devoid of life.

During this bizarre and eerie time I used to walk the near empty streets of what seemed like a movie set devoid of actors. I did this to avoid cabin fever and for my mental and physical health-and to get away from my housemates!
With a sense of shock we watched our whole world come to a grinding halt.

This lady stuck in a first floor apartment building had found a way to beat the Covid blues with a book.
We were suddenly confined to our houses with no contact with anyone else for 6 weeks with only essential shopping and exercise in our local neighbourhood allowed. You will probably have experienced this wherever you live-it runs so against our gregarious human nature.

This sums up how we felt so disjointed during this time

The whole city seemed to be covered in a dark shroud

Even churches went up for sale with no churchgoers

Suddenly the impact of a virus sprung from half a world away hit home and our world became a very small and confined one

This cat's look says it all,- let me outta here!

Many shops shut down permanently with no business like this fashion store on a trendy shopping street

People started putting stuffed animals in house and business windows as a sign of optimism and to give kids a lift. This one is in a luxury car shop.

Because we went into lockdown so fast and hard we managed to contain Covid and after the first lockdown we've only had two more shorter ones. Life is relatively back to a so called normal apart from wearing masks on public transport.
I really feel for those of you still in the grip of lockdown or restrictions. It can really get you down.

Horrible times, but hopefully the worst is behind us.
