Dereliction

Every year in Auckland there is a photography festival. And every year there is a competition which anyone can enter called "My day in Auckland".The only stipulation is that the photos must be taken ONLY on the picked day-from midnight to midnight.
It is a great day to plan for if you're into photography - as a challenge and also just to get out and see the city thru. different eyes. The ordinary can become extraordinary in the right conditions and things you take for granted can really come alive if seen thru. the lens with a prescribed narrative(a day in the life of...).The top prizes are a high end camera and $$$ so a lot of people enter. So here are a few of my shots from that Saturday.

I usually start Saturdays with a swim and this is the family wave pool next door.It is a real melting pot of cultures all bound by love for their kids and the love of water-nice cosy tepid water! There is a wave and a hydroslide as well as spas, saunas and steam rooms.Tire the little critters out!

My friend and I planned a little road trip to various places out of the city. This is a historic wharf that was restored from a very bad condition. It was once a busy little river port that long ago became obsolete. Now it is used by fishermen and kids swimming(and /or drinking away from their parents)We all had a place like that- right??

Beauty in decay.
The main focus of our shots was an old abandoned factory that I have posted photos of before. We both took photos of each other for the competition as having a person in the image gives it a bit more interest.I love this place and took a few extra shots for posterity as the place is really starting to deteriorate rapidly now-so sad.

After the factory we headed to a small settlement about an hour north of the city called Pakiri, located on a long sandy beach.

On the way we passed a secret swimming hole I know of as on a still day it can show some great reflections.Today we were in luck!

Pakiri beach yielded no special shots but you never know what pops up on the roadside if you keep your eyes open.
This cute little deserted church was a surprise find before we walked the long beach and headed for home with a few good shots for the contest.Wish us luck!
Thanks for coming on this trip!
(Maybe set yourself a photo day challenge where you live to get you to see your environment thru. different eyes.)
