New Athos: Hike to Anakopia 2 - visual history (13 photos)

This photograph completes the ascent to Anakopia. Thus, we find ourselves on a relatively flat plateau at the top of the mountain. It's small. There is barely enough room on it for the ruins of the old palace and fortress.

Anakopia is a medieval fortress, the capital of the Abkhazian kingdom, with which scientists associate two famous battles of the past - the Battle of Trachea and the siege of the fortress by the army of Murvan Kru. The famous Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea gave a description of a high mountain and a fortress that towered on it.
The word "trachea" in translation from Greek means "stern-siliceous", a similar meaning has the Abkhazian word "anakopia" - cut with protrusions. Sources say that the Trachea fortress was built by a certain Thomas the Armenian. It was located at the very top of the mountain. The citadel was beautifully fortified, a temple was built inside it, on the remains of the walls of which early Christian symbols and an inscription in Greek are still preserved.

We will definitely go inside and see what is there. But we missed part of the way up. We have not yet reached this site. If you are facing a fortress, what is behind you? Just look around ... the view is beautiful. At the bottom right, you see the system of lakes in the city park of New Athos, closer to the center you can see the monastery, and in the distance, in the haze on the very promontory, is the capital of Abkhazia, Sukhum (formerly Sebastopolis).

Эта фотография завершает подъём на Анакопию. Таким образом мы попадаем на относительно ровное плато на вершине горы. Оно маленькое. На нём едва хватает места для развалин старого дворца и крепости.

Анакопия – это средневековая крепость, столица Абхазского царства, с которой ученые связывают две известные битвы прошлого – Трахейскую битву и осаду крепости войском Мурвана Кру. Известный византийский историк Прокопий Кесарийский дал описание высокой горы и крепости, возвышавшейся на ней.
Слово "трахея" в переводе с греческого означает "сурово-кремнистая", аналогичное значение имеет абхазское слово "анакопия" – изрезанная выступами. Источники говорят о том, что крепость Трахея была построена неким Фомой Армянином. Она располагалась на самом верху горы. Цитадель была прекрасно укреплена, внутри нее был построен храм, на остатках стен которого до сих пор сохранились раннехристианские символы и надпись на греческом языке.

Мы обязательно зайдём внутрь и посмотрим, что там есть. Но нами пропущена часть пути наверх. Мы ещё не поднялись на эту площадку. Если вы стоите лицом к крепости, что находится за вашей спиной? Просто оглянитесь... открывается прекрасный вид. Справа внизу вы видите систему озёр городского парка Нового Афона, ближе к центру можно разглядеть мужской монастырь, а вдали, в дымке на самом мысу расположена столица Абхазии Сухум (в прошлом Себастополис).
