Car Photography - What i learned

in Photography Lovers11 months ago

First thing i learned photographing a car. If you plan to photograph a car, think about getting polarizing filter. If you plan to photograph a black shinny car, don't think, get a polarizing filter. This thing reflects everything, a lot. You can probably see me in every shot here, on some photos in multiple reflections 😁

Second thing i learned photographing a car, it is kinda like taking portraits. It has the nicer side, there are angles that are more flattering, there are go to poses (front, 2/3 front, 1/3 front, profile shot, the position of the rims...). In some cases it is harder than portraits as it will not move by itself to change the pose. On the other hand, it can hold the pose forever.

Third thing i learned photographing a car is that i don't have an eye for recognizing all that mentioned in the point no 2. It is probably a thing of practice, and i didn't photograph a lot of cars. So who knows, maybe i will learn.

First i thought this would be a nice place for a shot, realized right away that the trees are to close and the car looks like it has camo paint, not black paint.

Moved a bit with no trees on this side, it was almost ok.

The moment i changed the angle, the crazy camo paint is back.

Moved to a parking lot with more empty space. The tree you see here is 15-20 meters away :)

Made my peace with the reflections and just accepted them.

I did some light painting of it, and i am much happier with those. Click on the photo to check those out

I don't know much about car photography, I have always considered it to be a very specialised kind of photography meant to be done in huge studios and fancy lighting gear but you have made a very amusing post out of your experience :)

i think huge studios and fancy lightning gear helps a loot :D

Frequency Separation works just as well for car's paint as it does for human skin. (If you need to do it in future)

makes sense that it would work, never thought about it :)

Yes, because of my interests, I often look at a lot of photos of cars and I always pay attention to whether the reflections do not distort the body of the car. It often looks like the "camouflage" used today by manufacturers on test cars to hide their appearance from papparazia :) My guess is that it is not easy to set the vehicle in the right lighting. I don't know anything about photography.
Here is a great example, there are of course a few reflections, but they rather emphasize and do not blur the shape of the car body.

that looks like it was set up in the middle of no where with only thing to reflect was the sky :D and the reflection on the side does emphasizes the line of the car.

Hmm
I'm glad that I also learned something from you in car photography
You're very good at it!!!

i would say more decent than good :)

I really liked the advice you give, they are things that are learned through practice but when reading them they save you a bit of time and practice sessions, for example, the one about being careful with the trees seemed really effective to me, when you moved to another location the result really improved a lot.

i think the filter would help also, but not having anything around helped a lot.

Wow I really like all the shots you took it so lovely and nice.

Welcome to my world 😂
I don't photograph cars, but I do a lot of exhibition photos and reflection is my biggest enemy. You had the luxury to move the car around at least. I can't move the artworks as that would mean vandalism 😂

Who said photographing is easy, right?

Anyway, excellent job Marko! I love all the photos, regardless of the difficulties.

I am very fond of cars since my childhood and the way you have drawn this car is very beautiful and nice to my heart, the way it looks brilliant, the black color is amazing. Looks much nicer and I will definitely use the filter you mentioned.
