Hello HIVEs!
Last Friday, I attended a vernissage by the artist Ahmet Ünal at Steinhagen Town Hall, which inspired me greatly. Ahmet's exhibition "Insights" shows 20 abstract digital photographs. The pictures show images of mostly scratched surfaces that have been alienated through post-processing. Certain structures have been emphasized, fields of tension created, hidden structures made visible.
When I look at the pictures, I always think about how I would realize the picture. These thoughts inspired me so much that I set up a set in my studio that same evening to try out a few light paintings.
Am vergangenen Freitag besuchte ich im Rathaus Steinhagen eine Vernissage des Künstlers Ahmet Ünal, die mich sehr inspirierte. Ahmets Ausstellung " Einblicke" zeigt 20 abstrakte Digitalfotografien. Die Bilder zeigen Ablichtungen von meist zerkratzen Oberflächen, die durch Nachbearbeitung verfremdet wurden. Bestimmte Strukturen wurden hervorgehoben, Spannungsfelder erzeugt, verborgene Strukturen sichtbar gemacht.
Bei der Betrachtung der Bilder überlege ich mir immer, wie ich das Bild umsetzen, realisieren würde. Diese Gedanken inspirierten mich so stark, dass ich am selben Abend noch ein Set in meinem Studio aufbaute um ein paar Lichtmalereien auszuprobieren.

Making Of
The set was quite simple. First I looked for some paper at home. An old newspaper and wrapping paper seemed to work well for a start. I crumpled it all up and then draped it on a tripod in front of the camera. My idea was to emphasize the contrasts with colored light. I used an RGB flashlight for this. I used it to shine different colors on the paper from above and below at an acute angle.
Das Set war recht einfach gestaltet. Zuerst suchte ich zu Hause etwas Papier. Eine alte Zeitung und Packpapier schien mir fürs erste gut geeignet. Das Ganze zerknüllte ich und drapierte es dann auf einem Stativ vor der Kamera. Meine Idee war es, die Kontraste durch farbiges Licht hervorzuheben. Dafür nutzte ich eine RGB-Tachenlampe. Mit ihr leuchtete ich von oben und von unten in einem spitzen Winkel in verschiedenen Farben auf das Papier.

This resulted in images that resemble a landscape photographed from a bird's eye view.
Dabei entstanden Bilder, die einer Landschaft, aus der Vogelperspektive fotografiert, ähneln.

Now I changed the perspective. I draped a newspaper on a music stand. The camera shot the whole thing from the front. I also used the RGB flashlight here and illuminated the scene once from the right and then from the left in two colors.
Nun änderte ich die Perspektive. Dafür drapierte ich eine Zeitung auf einen Notenständer. Die Kamera nahm das Ganze von vorn auf. Auch hier setzte ich die RGB-Taschenlampe ein und beleuchtete die Szene einmal von rechts und dann von links in zwei Farben.

Then I tried the whole thing with a folded newspaper. This was also illuminated from two sides with different colors.
Dann probierte ich das Ganze mit einer gefalteten Zeitung. Auch diese wurde von zwei Seiten mit unterschiedlichen Farben angeleuchtet.

Then I brought the wrapping paper back into play. This time I changed the perspective here too. The light from the RGB flashlight also came from the opposite sides.
Danach brachte ich das Packpapier wieder ins Spiel. Diesmal änderte ich auch hier die Perspektive. Das Licht der RGB-Taschenlampe kam auch hier von den gegenüberliegenden Seiten.

The artificially created mountain landscapes inspired me to take the final step. A volcano was needed! For this I installed an ultrasonic vaporizer on the music stand. Otherwise I proceeded as described above.
Die künstlich geschaffenen Berglandschaften inspirierten mich zum letzten Schritt. Ein Vulkan mußte her! Dafür Installierte ich einen Ultraschall Verdampfer am Notenständer. Ansonsten ging ich wie oben beschrieben vor.

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
