Last weekend, I reported here on the cultural event “Open studios in Steinhagen”. Today is the second part of my report on the event.

I had prepared various techniques to introduce the audience to light painting portraits. Today I would like to introduce you to my shadow paintings.
It's actually quite simple and maybe something for you to try out yourself? Let's get started.

Um dem Publikum Lightpainting-Portraits näher zu bringen, hatte ich mir verschiedene Techniken vorbereitet. Heute möchte ich dir meine Schattenbilder vorstellen. Eigentlich denkbar einfach und vielleicht mal etwas für dich, um es selbst auszuprobieren? Legen wir los.

To take the cover picture, I set up a frame consisting of two flash stands. These were connected at the top by an aluminum rod. Then I stretched a white sheet over it, which was attached to the frame with clamps. The canvas was ready. I placed the model behind the sheet and illuminated it from behind with a flashlight. This projected the model's shadow onto the sheet.

I had previously stuck a cut-off PET bottle to the lens hood of the lens using duct tape. I then attached this to the lens and illuminated it with a flashlight from an angle of 90 -110°. I optionally used different color filters for the flashlight.

Um das Titelbild aufzunehmen, stellte ich ein Gestell aus zwei Blitzstativen auf. Diese wurden an der Oberseite durch eine Aluminiumstange verbunden. Dann spannte ich ein weißes Bettlaken darüber, welches durch Klemmen am Gestell befestigt wurde. Fertig war die Leinwand. Das Modell platzierte ich hinter das Laken und beleuchtete es von hinten mit einer Taschenlampe. Dadurch wurde der Schatten des Models auf das Laken projiziert.

An der Gegenlichtblende des Objektivs hatte ich zuvor mit Duct-Tape eine abgeschnittene PET-Flasche geklebt. Diese montierte ich nun an das Objektiv und beleuchtete diese mit einer Taschenlampe aus einem Winkel von 90 -110°. Wahlweise benutzte ich verschiedene Farbfilter für die Taschenlampe.

The following picture was intended to create a concert atmosphere. Because there wasn't much space behind the sheet, I placed the three models on three chairs behind the sheet. The flashlight is partially visible in the picture. In this case, it didn't bother me.

Bei dem folgenden Bild sollte etwas Konzertstimmung aufkommen. Weil nicht viel Platz hinter dem Laken vorhanden war, platzierte ich die drei Modelle auf drei Stühlen hinter dem Laken. Die Taschenlampe ist hier teilweise im Bild zu erkennen. In diesem Fall hat es mich nicht gestört.

The themes were determined in collaboration with the visitors. Like the concert above, the next model wanted to go on an underwater excursion. I realized this without the sheet. Fiberglass was used here. After the model had been “painted” with the fiberglass on a flashlight, I used the lens hood with the PET bottle again. This time I illuminated the bottle with a flashlight without a color filter.

In Zusammenarbeit mit den Besuchern wurden die Themen bestimmt. Wie oben das Konzert, wollte das nächste Model einen Ausflug unter Wasser unternehmen. Dies realisierte ich ohne das Bettlaken. Hier kam Glasfaser zum Einsatz. Nachdem das Model mit dem Glasfaser an einer Taschenlampe "bemalt" wurde, setzte ich wieder die Gegenlichtblende mit der PET-Flasche ein. Diesmal beleuchtete ich die Flasche mit einer Taschenlampe ohne Farbfilter.

The “bottle trick” was apparently well received by the audience and found imitators. Here, a shooting star came into the picture once again.

Der "Flaschentrick" kam scheinbar gut beim Publikum an und fand Nachahmer. Hier kam noch einmal eine Sternschnuppe ins Bild.

Model: Annegret

The set behind the sheet is very practical for shy models who don't like to show themselves in front of the camera. This picture should include a flower and a heart if the model wishes. Et voila! Simply painted on the sheet from behind with a flashlight. This is actually a nice activity for a workshop.

Sehr praktisch ist das Set hinter dem Laken für scheue Models, die sich nicht so gerne vor der Kamera zeigen. Dieses Bild sollte auf Wunsch des Models eine Blume und ein Herz beinhalten. Et voila! Mit der Taschenlampe einfach mal von hinten auf das Laken gemalt. Eigentlich ist dies mal eine schöne Aktion für einen Workshop.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
