Light Painting With Camera Rotation In Atlantic Rainforest

I've been reporting on my trip to South America for 6 weeks now and there's more footage I'd like to share with you. This time it's about visiting Chris and Chris(tiane) in Mairiporã. The city is north of São Paulo on the Rio Juqueri River. There is the Parque Estadual da Cantareira in which there are still remnants of the Atlantic rainforest. The Atlantic Forest once covered 15% of Brazil. Now it's 1%. Mostly on poorly accessible slopes and mountains on the coasts.

Seit 6 Wochen berichte ich nun schon von meiner Südamerikareise und es gibt noch mehr Bildmaterial welches ich mit euch teilen möchte. Diesmal geht es um den Besuch bei Chris und Chris(tiane) in Mairiporã. Die Stadt liegt nördlich von São Paulo am Fluss Rio Juqueri. Hier gibt es den Parque Estadual da Cantareira in dem noch Reste des Atlantikregenwaldes stehen. Einst bedeckte der Atlantische Regenwald 15% Brasiliens. Jetzt sind es noch 1%. Meist an schlecht zugänglichen Hängen und Gebirgen an den Küsten.

The Gate

On the cover photo you don't see a rainforest, but the entrance gate decorated for Christmas with a piece of wall to Chris' property. Chris is very interested in light painting, so we took some time for it in the evening.

I operated the camera. It was rotated 12x by 30° for this picture. During the rotation I covered the lens with a black sack to avoid traces of light. Then Chris went by with a flashlight and blue color filter

Lightpainting Paradise along the wall and illuminate it. A few meters came together that evening. 🤣 The Christmas lights did the rest.

Auf dem Titelbild seht ihr aber keinen Regenwald, sondern das weihnachtlich geschmückte Eingangstor mit einem Stück Mauer zum Grundstück von Chris. Chris ist sehr am Lightpainting interessiert, so nahmen wir uns abends etwas Zeit dafür. Ich bediente die Kamera. Sie wurde für dieses Bild 12x um 30° gedreht. Während der Drehung deckte ich das Objektiv mit einem Schwarzen Sack ab, um keine Lichtspuren entstehen zu lassen. Dann ging Chris mit einer Taschenlampe und blauen Farbfilter von

Lightpainting Paradise an der Mauer entlang und beleuchte diese. Da kamen an diesen Abend einige Meter zusammen. 🤣 Den Rest machte die Weihnachtsbeleuchtung.

Above you can see the first recorded camera rotation. I found it kind of boring. Then we came up with the idea for the cover photo to illuminate the wall with a flashlight.

Oben seht ihr die zuerst aufgenommene Kamerarotation. Die fand ich irgendwie zu langweilig. Dann kam uns die Idee für das Titelbild, die Mauer mit einer Taschenlampe zu beleuchten.

And because we got the camera moving so nicely, I left out the black sack during the shoot. This then produced the above image.

Und weil wir die Kamera so schön in Schwung gebracht haben, ließ ich den schwarzen Sack mal während der Drehung weg. Das erzeugte dann das obige Bild.

We repeated the rotation again, only this time Chris added some color to the wall with the Flashlight and blue filter. We both liked that better.

Wir wiederholten die Rotation noch einmal, nur brachte diesmal Chris mit der blauen CONVOY noch etwas Farbe auf die Mauer. Das gefiel uns beiden schon besser.

The Atlantic Rainforest

But our topic is the Atlantic rainforest and the pictures of the gateway were just an exercise for us. So we moved towards the forest. First, I positioned the camera lens up next to a tree. We rotated the camera again in 30° steps and illuminated the tree in each step with an EMISAR (NOCTIGON) DM11.

Aber unser Thema ist ja der Atlantikregenwald und die Bilder von der Toreinfahrt waren nur eine Übung für uns. Also bewegten wir uns in Richtung Wald. Zuerst positionierte ich die Kamera mit Objektiv nach oben neben einen Baum. Wir ließen die Kamera wieder in 30° -Schritten rotieren und beleuchteten den Baum in jedem Step mit einer EMISAR (NOCTIGON) DM11.

We still had the blue flashlight with us. We tried that in the next picture. We turned the camera again in 30° steps and alternately illuminated the tree once with the DM11 and the Lightpainting Paradise flashlight with a blue color filter.

Wir hatten ja noch die blaue Taschenlampe mit. Das probierten wir im nächsten Bild aus. Wir drehten die Kamera wieder in 30° - Schritten und beleuchteten den Baum abwechselnd einmal mit der DM11 und der Lightpainting-Paradise-Taschenlampe mit blauen Farbfilter.

After that we looked for another place with a group of smaller trees and rotated the camera horizontally around the optical axis. The branches were illuminated with the DM11. I lit the foreground with the Lightpainting Paradise flashlight. In the picture above I used a red color filter and in the picture below I used a blue color filter.

Danach suchten wir uns einen anderen Platz mit einer Gruppe kleinerer Bäume und rotierten die Kamera horizontal um die optische Achse. Die Äste wurden mit der DM11 beleuchtet. Den Vordergrund beleuchtete ich mit der Lightpainting-Paradise-Taschenlampe. Im oberen Bild benutzte ich einen roten- und im unteren Bild einen blauen Farbfilter.

The Nature

Below I show a few more pictures of the forest in which the light paintings were created in daylight. It's the small animals that are dangerous here. You don't get to see the big predators at least during the day.

Nachfolgend zeige ich noch ein paar Bilder vom Wald in dem die Aufnahmen entstanden sind bei Tageslicht. Es sind die kleinen Tiere, die hier gefährlich sind. Die großen Raubtiere bekommt man, zumindest am Tage, nicht zu Gesicht.

A small rattlesnake rested on a rock next to us.

Eine kleine Klapperschlange ruhte auf einem Stein neben uns.

On a tree were fire caterpillars also known as Bicho Gordo or Taturana. They are beautiful to photograph but can be extremely dangerous if touched.

The origin of the name Taturana itself comes from the word Tupi which means burning sensation (similar to fire). Some have thorns or venom that can even be fatal if left untreated.

An einem Baum befanden sich Feuerraupen, auch als Bicho Gordo oder Taturana bekannt sind. Sie sind schön zu fotografieren, können aber extrem gefährlich sein, wenn man sie zu berührt. Der Ursprung des Namens Taturana selbst stammt vom Wort Tupi ab, was soviel wie brennendes Gefühl (ähnlich wie Feuer) bedeutet. Einige haben Dornen oder Gift, das sogar tödlich sein kann, wenn es unbehandelt bleibt.

The cicadas on the other hand, are completely harmless.

In the picture you can see the shell of a cicada left behind when they leave the ground climb a tree and molt. The little animals then provide a deafening sound in the forest.

Völlig ungefährlich hingegen sind die Zikaden. Auf dem Bild sieht man die Hülle einer Zikade, die zurückgelassen wird, wenn diese das Erdreich verlassen, auf einen Baum klettern und sich häuten. Die kleinen Tierchen sorgen dann für einen ohrenbetäubenden Sound im Wald.

Finally, I would like to introduce you to Chris. Chris was born in Belgium and lives in Brazil with his Brazilian wife and their son. We visit each other from time to time. In addition to the obligatory BBQ and of course beer light painting always plays a major role. In the picture above he modeled for me that evening. Here fiber optics on Magilight by FOTORGEAR and a Lightpainting Paradise flashlight were used. I hope you enjoyed this little excursion into the woods. Please leave your comments!

Abschließend möchte ich euch Chris vorstellen. Chris ist ein gebürtiger Belgier, der mit seiner brasilianischen Frau und dem gemeinsamen Sohn in Brasilien lebt. Wir besuchen uns ab und zu. Neben dem obligatorischen BBQ und natürlich Bier, spielt Light Painting immer eine große Rolle. Auf dem Bild oben hat er an diesem Abend für mich gemodelt. Hier wurden Glasfaser auf Magilight von FOTORGEAR und eine Lightpainting Paradise Taschenlampe verwendet.
