Quarantine

Hello HIVEs!

It hit me at the vernissage last weekend in our town hall. CORONA! That means at least five days of quarantine. What drama! I had planned a whole week of light painting with friends in Berlin. Nothing will come of it now. The only alternative left now is light painting alone at home. 😔

So I made a virtue out of necessity and experimented a bit in my office. Since a model was also out of the question due to the quarantine, a plastic head (Mr. Smith) had to be the model for me. At least he was very patient with me and kept nice and still. 😉

I had the idea to create an android that is in the MATRIX. Parts of the electronics built into the Android should become visible.
This required some preparation.

Auf der Vernissage am letzten Wochenende bei uns im Rathaus hatte es mich erwischt. CORONA! Das heisst mindestens fünf Tage Quarantäne. Welch ein Drama! Dabei hatte ich eine ganze Woche Lightpainting mit Freunden in Berlin geplant. Daraus wird jetzt erstmal nichts. Als Alternative bleibt jetzt nur noch Lightpainting allein zu Haus. 😔
Also machte ich aus der Not eine Tugend und experimentierte ein wenig in meinem Büro. Da ein Model wegen der Quarantäne auch nicht in Frage kam, musste ein Plastikkopf (Mr. Smith) für mich Model stehen. Wenigstens war er sehr geduldig mit mir und hat schön stillgehalten. 😉
Ich hatte die Idee einen Androiden zu schaffen, der sich in der MATRIX befindet. Es sollten Teile der im Androiden verbauten Elektronik sichtbar werden. Dafür waren einige Vorbereitungen notwendig.

Lightpainting

In the title picture you can see the result of two nights of tinkering. As always, the picture was created in one exposure without Photoshop.

First, a BMP file for the MATRIX theme had to be created for the background and loaded into the pixel stick.
Then a circuit board was attached to a tripod using a clamp. For this part of the shot I used a Canon EF16-35mm ƒ4L macro lens.
I exposed the circuit board with a Convoy S2+ (blue LED) covered from the front with a black tape. I drilled a hole in the tape. So I created a fine beam of light that I used to trace the parts of the board I wanted in the picture.
Then I put the tripod with the board to the side, changed the lens and exposed "Mr. Smith" approx. 45° from behind with a Convoy S2+ (LED red).
Finally, I took the pixel stick and rotated the MATRIX image 360° to create the tube effect.

Im Titelbild seht ihr das Ergebnis von zwei Nächten Tüftelei. Das Bild entstand wie immer in einer Belichtung ohne Photoshop. Als erstes musste für den Hintergrund ein BMP-File für das MATRIX-Thema erstellt-und in den Pixelstick geladen werden. Dann wurde eine Platine mit Hilfe einer Klemme an einem Stativ befestigt. Für diesen Teil der Aufnahme verwendete ich ein Canon EF16-35mm ƒ4L Makro Objektiv.

Die Platine belichtete ich mit einer von vorn mit einem Klebestreifen abgedeckten Convoy S2+ (LED blau). In den Klebestreifen bohrte ich ein Loch. So erzeugte ich einen feinen Lichtstrahl, mit dem ich die Teile der Platine nachzeichnete, die ich im Bild haben wollte.

Danach räumte ich das Stativ mit der Platine an die Seite, wechselte das Objektiv und belichtete "Mr.Smith" ca. 45° von hinten mit einer Convoy S2+ (LED rot).
Zum Schluss nahm ich den Pixelstick und drehte das MATRIX-Bild 360°, um den Röhreneffekt zu erzeugen.

In the picture above you can see one of my first attempts. Here I wanted to bring another glowing eye into the picture, similar to that of the TERMINATOR.

Ultimately, I wasn't satisfied with the result and rejected the idea.

Im Bild oben seht ihr einen meiner ersten Versuche. Hier wollte ich noch ein leuchtendes Auge, ähnlich wie beim TERMINATOR ins Bild bringen. Mit dem Ergebnis war ich letztendlich nicht zufrieden und verwarf die Idee wieder.

The Set

In the picture below I show the set. The cover photo was taken in my office, which has been converted into a photo studio. I mounted a roll of black background cardboard on one wall. Curtains made of black Molton fabric hang on the right and left side. This allows me to create a completely dark room at any time of the day. On the lower side of "Mr.Smith's" head I glued an Arca-Swiss plate with hot glue. This is attached to a ball head on the tripod. This simplifies the work when aligning the "model". In front of it you can see the tripod with clamp and circuit board. The tripod was removed from the picture after the board was exposed.
Im Bild unten zeige ich das Set. Das Titelbild entstand in meinem zum Foto-Studio umgebauten Büro. An einer Wand habe ich eine Rolle mit schwarzen Hintergrundkarton montiert. An der rechten und linken Seite hängen Vorhänge aus schwarzen Molton-Stoff. So kann ich zu jeder Tageszeit einen völlig dunklen Raum schaffen. An der unteren Seite des Kopfs von "Mr.Smith" habe ich mit Heißkleber eine Arca-Swiss-Platte geklebt. Diese ist an einem Kugelkopf auf dem Stativ befestigt. Dies vereinfacht die Arbeit beim Ausrichten des "Models". Davor seht ihr das Stativ mit Klemme und Platine. Das Stativ wurde aus dem Bild entfernt, nachdem die Platine belichtet war.

Matrix Set

After two nights of tinkering, the cover photo was ready. After my quarantine it is time to apply the knowledge to the living object and finish some portraits. So stay tuned!
Nach zwei Nächten Tüftelei war das Titelbild fertig. Nach meiner Quarantäne ist es an der Zeit, das Wissen am lebenden Objekt anzuwenden und einige Portraits fertigzustellen. Also bleibt dran!
