Mirroring or Camera Rotation?

Symmetrical shots have their very own aesthetic appeal. The casual observer often comments on a camera rotation with: "Great reflection!". If the light painter is going for it, you can take it for it, but on closer inspection you can usually see that it is a 180° camera rotation. In this post I would like to show you some examples.

Symmetrische Aufnahmen haben ihren ganz eigenen ästhetischen Reiz. Oft kommentiert der flüchtiger Betrachter eine Kamerarotation mit: "tolle Spiegelung!". Wenn der Lightpainter es darauf anlegt, kann man es auch dafür halten, meist erkennt man bei genauer Betrachtung, dass es sich um eine Kamerarotation um 180° handelt. In diesem Post möchte ich einige Beispiele zeigen.

At the beginning of May 2024 I visited a pyramid somewhere in Brandenburg (D) together with Hans, @stepko and @lichtkunstfoto. @lichtkunstfoto was kind enough to chauffeur @stepko and me there from the hotel. Hans traveled from home in his own car especially for this light painting evening.
In the first two pictures we see a camera rotation of 180° around the optical axis. The shadows of the trees in the top picture reveal that it cannot be a reflection. In the picture below, it is no longer so clear whether it is a camera rotation or a reflection due to the different illumination.

Anfang Mai 2024 besuchte ich zusammen mit Hans, @stepko und @lichtkunstfoto eine Pyramide irgendwo in Brandenburg (D). @Lichtkunstfoto war so nett @stepko und mich vom Hotel dorthin zu chauffieren. Hans reiste an diesem Tag extra für diesen Lightpainting-Abend von zu Hause mit dem eigenen Auto an. Auf den ersten beiden Bildern sehen wir eine Kamerarotation von 180° um die optische Achse. Die Schatten der Bäume verraten in dem oberen Bild , dass es sich nicht um eine Spiegelung handeln kann. Im Bild unten ist durch die unterschiedliche Ausleuchtung schon nicht mehr so klar zu erkennen, ob es sich um eine Kamerarotation oder Spiegelung handelt.

In the third image, it is even more difficult to recognize that this is not a reflection. Here, too, the camera was rotated 180° around the optical axis. First I aligned the camera so that an axis symmetry was created in the center of the image. Then I started the exposure and exposed the scene with a flashlight. The lens was then covered. Geane and Renata on the right and left of the swing changed places and Rodrigo in the middle rested his chin on the other arm. Now the lens was uncovered again and I exposed the scene once more with the flashlight. The close observer will immediately notice the different positions of the beams on the swing and on the fence, as well as the different positions of Geane's and Renata's arms.

Auf dem dritten Bild ist es noch schwieriger zu erkennen, dass es sich um keine Spiegelung handelt. Auch hier wurde die Kamera 180° um die optische Achse gedreht. Zuerst richtete ich die Kamera so aus, dass eine Achsensymmetrie in der Mitte des Bildes hergestellt wurde. Dann habe ich die Belichtung gestartet und die Szene mit einer Taschenlampe belichtet. Danach wurde das Objektiv abgedeckt. Geane und Renata rechts und links auf der Schaukel haben ihre Plätze gewechselt und Rodrigo in der Mitte hat sein Kinn auf dem anderen Arm abgestützt. Jetzt wurde das Objektiv wieder aufgedeckt und ich belichtete die Szene ein weiteres mal mit der Taschenlampe. Dem genauen Betrachter wird die unterschiedliche Stellung der Balken an der Schaukel und am Zaun, sowie die unterschiedliche Haltung der Arme von Geane und Renata sofort ins Auge fallen.

Everyone knows the playing cards on which the jack, queen and king are shown symmetrically. That was the idea for the following picture. The only difference was that I wanted to contrast the mirror image. I immediately put this spontaneous idea into practice. Unfortunately, I was traveling and my equipment was limited and my model (Geane) was tired. Not good conditions. But I had to realize the idea first. I think the theme can be expanded.

Jeder kennt die Spielkarten, auf denen Bube, Dame, König symmetrisch dargestellt sind. Das war die Idee für das folgende Bild. Nur dass ich die Spiegelung eher konträr gegenüberstellen wollte. Diese spontane Idee setzte ich sofort um. Leider war ich gerade auf Reisen und mein Equipment war begrenzt und mein Model (Geane) war müde. Keine gute Voraussetzung. Aber die Idee musste ich erstmal umsetzen. Ich denke, das Thema ist ausbaufähig.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
