Hello HIVEs!
It's been a while since I realised this light painting on the concrete pavilion in Wiedenbrück. It was created as part of the preparations for the exhibition "VARIABLE", which our artist group CreARTiv exhibited at Steinhagen Town Hall. The motif could be freely chosen and was to be presented in various techniques.
Es ist schon eine Weile her, dass ich dieses Lightpainting am Beton-Pavillon in Wiedenbrück realisierte. Es entstand im Rahmen der Vorbereitung zur Ausstellung "VARIABLE“, welche unsere Künstlergruppe CreARTiv im Rathaus Steinhagen ausstellte. Das Motiv konnte dafür frei gewählt- und sollte in verschiedenen Techniken präsentiert werden.

The Location
During a cycle tour with my wife to Wiedenbrück, we cycled along the oxbow lake of the Ems, right through the Flora-Westfalica Park. There we came across the BETONPAVILLON by the artist Christian Odzuck.
Während einer Radtour mit meiner Frau nach Wiedenbrück, fuhren wir ein Stück am Altarm der Ems entlang, quer durch den Flora-Westfalica-Park. Dort stießen wir auf den BETONPAVILLON des Künstlers Christian Odzuck.
I took a closer look at this pavilion. Light painting is not easy here, as there are street lamps near the pavilion and also in the pavilion itself. This restricts the perspective. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a try. There is a cemetery with a car park right next door and it's not far to the pavilion. So in the evening we drove back here by car, loaded with the necessary equipment.
Diesen Pavilion nahm ich näher unter die Lupe. Ein Lightpainting ist hier nicht leicht, da in der Nähe des Pavillons und auch im Pavillon selbst Straßenlaternen stehen. Dies schränkt die Perspektive ein. Dennoch entschied ich mich, es zu versuchen. Gleich nebenan gibt es einen Friedhof mit Parkplatz und man hat es nicht weit zum Pavillon. Also fuhren wir am Abend mit dem Auto, beladen mit dem nötigen Equipment, wieder hierher.
The Light-Painting
Firstly, I mounted an ND filter in front of the camera lens to eliminate the ambient light from the streetlights. For the light painting I brought my 2m long DIY pixel stick and my assortment of CONVOY S2+ torches with different LED colours. I had the idea to realise my SAFE! -concept in colour here. To do this, I configured my pixel stick with the appropriate colours. With the stick in my hand, I walked along the path around the pavilion, through it and then back towards the camera. I swivelled the tool in wave-like movements to simulate the effect of a stage curtain. I then threw the light from the CONVOY torch onto the concrete walls.
Zuerst montierte ich einen ND-Filter vor das Objektiv der Kamera, um das Umgebungslicht von den Straßenlaternen zu eliminieren. Für das Lightpainting brachte ich meinen 2m langen DIY-Pixel-Stick und mein Sortiment CONVOY S2+ -Taschenlampen mit verschieden LED-Farben mit. Ich hatte die Idee, hier mein SAFE! -Konzept in Farbe umzusetzen. Dafür Konfigurierte ich meinen Pixel-Stick mit den entsprechenden Farben. Mit dem Stick in der Hand lief ich am Weg entlang um den Pavillon, durch ihn hindurch, dann wieder zurück in Richtung Kamera. Dabei schwenkte ich das Tool in wellenförmigen Bewegungen, um den Effekt eines Bühnenvorhangs zu simulieren. Danach warf ich das Licht der CONVOY -Taschenlampe an die Betonwände.

The Drawing
For the exhibition, however, I needed at least two more techniques to do justice to the "VARIABLE" theme. So I drew the scene in pencil on paper.
Für die Ausstellung benötigte ich aber mindestens noch zwei weitere Techniken, um dem Thema "VARIABEL" gerecht zu werden. Dafür zeichnete ich die Szene mit Bleistift auf Papier.
The Watercolour
The third technique I wanted to present was a watercolour. What you see below is the first watercolour I ever painted in my life. I didn't find it appealing. So I decided to take part in a few workshops to better understand and apply the technique. I liked the watercolours I created during the workshops (autumn leaves) much better. In the end, I discarded this theme and switched to the autumn theme.
Als dritte Technik wollte ich ein Aquarell präsentieren. Was ihr unten seht, ist das erste Aquarell, welches ich in meinem Leben gemalt habe. Ich fand es nicht ansprechend. Deshalb entschloss ich mich, an ein paar Workshops teilzunehmen, um die Technik besser zu verstehen und anzuwenden. Die Aquarelle, die während der Workshops entstanden (Herbstblätter) gefielen mir sehr viel besser. Letztendlich verwarf ich dieses Thema und stellte auf das Thema Herbst um.

The CONVOY S2+ is available as a kit for customisation: the LED driver and housing can be varied as desired. If you don't like tinkering, these torches are also available in a ready-to-use configuration. There is not much difference in price.
Auf den folgenden Bildern zeige ich die eingesetzten Tools.
Die CONVOY S2+ gibt es als Bausatz zur individuellen Gestaltung: Treiber LED und Gehäuse können nach belieben variiert werden. Wer nicht so gerne bastelt, bekommt diese Taschenlampen auch fertig konfiguriert. Im Preis macht es keinen großen Unterschied.

The Exhibition
On Friday, 16 February 2024, my exhibition will open at Steinhagen Town Hall. The vernissage starts at 19:00. The title is Nachtaktiv + Durchgedreht. Our mayor Mrs Sarah Süß will open the vernissage. Afterwards I will give an introduction to the exhibited work. Andreas Altmeyer and Thomas "Lupo" Hölscher will provide the musical accompaniment. I would be very pleased to welcome you.
For all those who can't attend, I'll report on it here next Sunday. So stay tuned!
Am Freitag, den 16.02.2024 wird im Rathaus Steinhagen meine Ausstellung eröffnet. Die Vernissage startet um 19:00 Uhr. Der Titel lautet Nachtaktiv + Durchgedreht. Unsere Bürgermeisterin Frau Sarah Süß wird die Vernissage eröffnen. Danach werde ich eine Einführung in das ausgestellte Werk geben. Andreas Altmeyer und Thomas "Lupo" Hölscher werden das Ganze musikalisch untermalen. Über einen Besuch würde ich mich sehr freuen.

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Danke! Ich musste mich nach 30 Jahren erst wieder in die Materie einarbeiten. Aquarell finde ich mittlerweile ziemlich cool. Leider habe ich zu wenig Zeit dafür.
