Last Sunday I reported about the first part of our bike tour through the north of Germany and showed the pictures of the lighthouse monument Obereversand.

We had left the stations Bremen, Drummer Neufeld and Stade behind us and thus completed the first 200km. The next destination was Büsum. Geane and I had to pedal another 112km to get there. On this stretch, we crossed the Elbe at Glückstadt. We had a stroke of luck there, as a strut on our luggage rack broke just before the ferry. A temporary repair with cable ties allowed us to continue our journey, but I felt more comfortable fixing it 100%. We made a stop at Fahrrad Horn, who replaced the broken part with a self-made one. An expert: thank you!
Now the road was clear and we reached Büsum in the early evening.

Am letzten Sonntag berichtete ich über den ersten Teil unserer Fahrradtour durch den Norden und zeigte die Bilder vom Leuchtturmdenkmal Obereversand.

Die Stationen Bremen, Drummer Neufeld und Stade hatten wir hinter uns gelassen und somit die ersten 200km absolviert. Das nächste Ziel war Büsum. Dafür mussten Geane und ich weitere 112km in die Pedale treten. Auf dieser Strecke überquerten wir die Elbe bei Glückstadt. Dort hatten wir in der Tat Glück im Unglück, denn kurz vor der Fähre riss eine Strebe unseres Gepäckständers. Eine provisorische Reparatur mit Kabelbindern ermöglichte zwar die Weiterfahrt, aber mir war es wohler, die Sache 100%ig in Ordnung zu bringen. Dafür legten wir einen Stopp bei Fahrrad Horn ein, der uns das gebrochene Teil durch ein selbst gefertigtes ersetzte. Ein Fachmann: Danke!
Nun war der Weg frei und wir erreichten Büsum am frühen Abend.

The next morning, the weather was pretty bad. Repeated showers and strong winds. We waited in the hotel until it got a little brighter. The next stage was only going to be 40 km long. The tailwind ensured that we covered the first 20 km very quickly. However, things didn't go quite so well for the last 20km of the stage. Rain and strong winds from the front slowed us down. At the finish in St. Peter Ording, the sun greeted us after all.

Am nächsten Morgen erwartete uns ziemlich schlechtes Wetter. Immer wieder Schauer und starker Wind. Wir warteten im Hotel, bis es etwas heller wurde. Die nächste Etappe sollte nur 40km lang werden. Der Rückenwind sorgte dafür, dass wir die ersten 20km sehr schnell hinter uns ließen. Für die letzten 20km der Etappe lief es allerdings nicht ganz so gut. Regen und starker Wind von vorn bremste uns aus. Am Ziel in St. Peter Ording begrüßte uns dann doch noch die Sonne.

After dinner, we went to the beach with our camera and tripod. After all, we wanted to create a light painting that evening. To do this, we went to one of the many pile dwellings. The sky was already closing in dramatically again. Nevertheless, I didn't give up hope of a beautiful sunset. The weather changes very quickly here. The following picture and the cover picture were taken very quickly after a short adjustment.

Nach dem Abendessen ging es mit Kamera und Stativ an den Strand. Schließlich sollte an diesem Abend noch ein Lightpainting entstehen. Dafür suchten wir einen der vielen Pfahlbauten auf. Der Himmel zog sich schon wieder dramatisch zu. Trotzdem gab ich die Hoffnung auf einen schönen Sonnenuntergang nicht auf. Das Wetter ändert sich hier sehr schnell. Das folgende- und das Titelbild entstanden nach kurzer Einstellung sehr schnell.

I also captured the next perspective very quickly. Then there were two more perspectives and some ideas. So I grabbed the camera and moved on to the next side.

Die nächste Perspektive fing ich auch sehr schnell ein. Dann waren da noch zwei weitere Perspektiven und einige Ideen. Also Kamera geschnappt und ab an die nächste Seite.

Very dark clouds were already gathering from there. There wasn't much time left for my ideas. But the sky was so impressive that I couldn't resist. I positioned the camera for the last perspective of the evening. Not only was it raining, but there was also a strong wind with a heavy load of sand. At the last second, I managed to get the camera into my rucksack. I'm happy with the result, even if I wasn't able to realize all my ideas. Maybe we'll come back here again sometime.

Von dort zogen schon sehr dunkle Wolken auf. Da war nicht mehr viel Zeit für meine Ideen. Aber der Himmel präsentierte sich so eindrucksvoll, dass ich nicht widerstehen konnte. Ich positionierte die Kamera für die letzte Perspektive des Abends. Es kam nicht nur Regen, sondern auch starker Wind mit einer kräftigen Ladung Sand. In letzter Sekunde konnte ich die Kamera noch in den Rucksack retten. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich zufrieden, auch wenn ich nicht alle Ideen umsetzen konnte. Vielleicht kehren wir mal hierher zurück.

The Set

As always, I'm showing a picture from the set here. I equipped the camera with a polarizing filter, an ND64 filter and a graduated filter for the rotatrion images. The graduated filter was set to darken the lower half of the image. After the shutter button was pressed, I waited 15 seconds, then covered the lens, rotated the camera 180° around the optical axis, rotated the filter 180° and opened the lens for another 15 seconds.

Wie immer, zeige ich an dieser Stelle ein Bild vom Set. Die Kamera rüstete ich für die Rotatrions-Bilder mit einem Polarisations-, einem ND64- und einem Verlaufsfiler aus. Der Verlaufsfilter wurde so eingestellt, dass die untere Hälfte des Bildes abgedunkelt wird. Nachdem der Auslöser gedrückt wurde, wartete ich 15 Sekunden, dann deckte ich das Objektiv ab, drehte die Kamera 180° um die optische Achse, drehte den Filter um 180° und öffnete das Objektiv für weitere 15 Sekunden.

The Set

The next day we went on to Husum and then to the Baltic Sea in Flensburg. From there we took the train home. In total, we covered over 500 km on the tandem. Despite a few showers, it was a very nice trip and we took some unique pictures.

Am nächsten Tag ging es weiter nach Husum und dann an die Ostsee nach Flensburg. Von dort fuhren wir mit der Bahn nach Hause. Insgesamt legten wir über 500km mit dem Tandem zurück. Trotz einiger Schauer war es eine sehr schöne Reise bei der einige einzigartige Bilder entstanden sind.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
