Light Painting During Daylight In The Canyon Arroio Do Leao

While travelling through Santa Catarina (Brazil), my wife Geane and I visited the Arroio Do Leao canyon on the outskirts of the town of Alfredo Wagner. The name Leao (lion) is somewhat misleading, as there are no lions here. However, the puma is at home here. Unfortunately, these animals live very secluded lives and almost never show themselves. Agriculture has displaced the Atlantic rainforest except for a few patches. Around the canyon, however, nature is still intact. We had rented a house nearby in the hope of being able to do a photo session with light painting at night. However, a first visit showed that this project was not feasible for us. After a rainy October, the river was carrying too much water. What's more, the water was cloudy after the rain, so you couldn't see where you were stepping. That's why I decided on a light painting in daylight.

Auf der Reise durch Santa Catarina (Brasilien) besuchten meine Frau Geane und ich den Canyon Arroio Do Leao am Rande der Stadt Alfredo Wagner. Der Name Leao (Löwe) täuscht etwas, denn hier gibt es keine Löwen. Allerdings ist hier der Puma zu Hause. Leider leben diese Tiere sehr zurückgezogen und zeigen sich fast nie. Die Landwirtschaft hat den Atlantikregenwald bis auf wenige Flecken verdrängt. Rings um den Canyon ist die Natur allerdings noch intakt. Wir hatten ganz in der Nähe ein Haus gemietet, in der Hoffnung, auch Nachts dort eine Fotosession mit Lightpainting durchführen zu können. Eine erste Visite zeigte jedoch, dass dieses Vorhaben für uns nicht zu realisieren war. Nach einem verregnetem Oktober führte der Fluss zu viel Wasser. Ausserdem war das Wasser nach dem Regen trübe, so dass man nicht sehen konnte wo man hintritt. Deshalb entschied ich mich für ein Lightpainting bei Tageslicht.

Making Of

The cover picture shows the canyon with a target circle. Geane was standing in the dark crevice at around 8.00 a.m. in a circle with a NOCTIGON DM11 First she aimed the cone of light at the lens, which I had covered with black molleton before starting the camera. I started the camera, removed the molleton from the lens and rotated the camera 360° using the CRT (camera rotation tool). I then covered the lens again and signalled to Geane that she could switch off the torch and come to me. When that was done, I took the molleton off the lens again. After two minutes, I switched off the camera.

Geane stand in der dunklen Felsspalte ca. 8:00 Uhr im Kreis mit einer NOCTIGON DM11 Zuerst visierte sie mit dem Lichtkegel das Objektiv an, welches ich vor dem Start der Kamera mit schwarzem Molton abgedeckt hatte. Ich startete die Kamera, nahm das Molton vom Objektiv und drehte die Kamera mit Hilfe des CRT (Kamera-Rotations-Tools) um 360°. Danach deckte ich das Objektiv wieder ab und gab Geane ein Zeichen, dass sie die Taschenlampe ausschalten- und zu mir kommen kann. Als das geschehen war, nahm ich das Molton wieder vom Objektiv. Nach weiteren zwei Minuten schaltete ich die Kamera aus.

I changed my strategy for the next picture. Geane, torch in hand, took a position about 1.5 metres from me under a rocky outcrop. I started the camera, rotated the camera 360° around the optical axis again with the CRT, covered the lens again, then pointed the camera at the subject and removed the lens cover for the rest of the exposure time.

Für das nächste Bild änderte ich meine Strategie. Geane nahm, mit der Taschenlampe in der Hand, ca. 1.5m von mir unter einem Felsvorsprung Platz. Ich startete die Kamera, drehte die Kamera wieder mit dem CRT 360° um die optische Achse, deckte das Objektiv wieder ab, richtete die Kamera danach auf das Motiv aus, und entfernte die Abdeckung des Objektivs für die restliche Belichtungszeit.

The Location

To get into the canyon, we had to wade through the river. Lazaro is the owner of the land on which the canyon is located. He gave us instructions on the best way to get in. If you walked along the right edge of the water, it was 1 metre deep at its deepest point. Two steps to the left and it was already 2.5 metres deep. So we carefully climbed up the river at the edge. I held the tripod in my hand and had the equipment in my backpack. I was dressed in swimming trunks, slippers and a hooded jacket, as it was relatively cold at this spot. I show the whole spectacle as a video at the end of the post. If you would like to experience this canyon up close, I recommend Lazaro's house. It's in a great location right next to the canyon and can accommodate up to 10 people. You can find more information here:

Um in den Canyon zu gelangen, mussten wir durch den Fluss waten. Lazaro ist der Besitzer des Grundstücks auf dem sich der Canyon befindet. Er gab uns Instruktionen, wie man am besten dort hinein gelangt. Wenn man sich am rechten Rand des Wassers bewegte, war es an der tiefsten Stelle 1m tief. Zwei schritte nach links waren es dann schon 2,5m. Also kletterten wir vorsichtig am Rand Flussaufwärts. Das Stativ hielt ich in der Hand und das Equipment hatte ich in meinem Rucksack. Bekleidet war ich mit Badehose, Badeschuhe und Kapuzenjacke, denn es war relativ kalt an diesem Ort. Das ganze Schauspiel zeige ich am Ende des Post als Video. Wer diesen Canyon gern hautnah erleben möchte dem empfehle ich das Haus von Lazaro. Es hat eine tolle Lage in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Canyon und bietet bis zu 10 Leuten Platz. The Set

This canyon offers a breathtaking backdrop. When I reached the end of the canyon, I put down my equipment and took my time to look around. The photo below shows how I set up the camera. It wasn't easy as you either had to find suitable rocks for the tripod or set up the tripod in the water. My Flipside 300 backpack from Lowepro was helpful again. You can open it in front of you like a belly bag without taking it off. I bought this rucksack second-hand 8 years ago and it still accompanies me all over the world today. An incredibly practical item!

Dieser Canyon bietet eine atemberaubende Kulisse. Am Ende des Canyon angekommen, legte ich das Equipment ab, um mich in Ruhe dort umzuschauen. Auf dem Foto unten zeige ich, wie ich die Kamera einrichte. Es war nicht ganz einfach, da man entweder passende Felsen für das Stativ finden- oder das Stativ im Wasser aufstellen mußte. Hilfreich war wieder mein Flipside 300 Rucksack von Lowepro. Den kann man wie einen Bauchladen vor sich öffnen ohne ihn abzulegen. Diesen Rucksack habe ich vor 8 Jahren gebraucht gekauft und er begleitet mich bis heute in der ganzen Welt. Ein unglaublich praktisches Teil!

I would have liked to try out a few more things. Unfortunately, you get cold feet in the canyon at some point.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
