A couple days ago I had someone tell me they loved my pictures but had to unfollow me because there were too many Ukrainian reblogs coming up in her feed from me. I didn't ask her what it was about the reblogs that she didn't like, since she didn't specify war, just nationality. I didn't ask if she only liked happy fluffy pretend-everything-is-fine posts because clearly if she's reading my posts she's not all about the happy fluff. I didn't argue that most of my reblogs are about people sharing their struggles with mental health while they seek physical safety in places they don't call home, women staying behind in the war zone to continue running their animals shelters and taking in pets abandoned by frightened families fleeing the country, and people who are not as white as my unfollower struggling to get the resources they need that for a while there were only available to refugees with Ukranian passports. I didn't I didn't tell her to go fuck herself and that I didn't care if someone like her had to unfollow me and tell me about it because she thought she was making some kind of point.
But I wanted to.
Instead I gave her the benefit of the doubt, figured maybe her communication skills weren't that great. I don't know what's going on on her end. Maybe my unfollower is very sensitive to war. I know I am. After a couple weeks I had to stop reading the news, not because I didn't care, but because I care too much and the feeling of helplessness to save those already killed is more than I can bear. It's so fucking hard even to write a sentence like that. Maybe my unfollower is only on Hive for the pink and pretty and that's fine. Plenty of other feel-good posts out there she can look at.
Of course, being human and vulnerable and so very sensitive (traits for which I am extremely proud, by the way), I wondered if maybe I should tone UP my posts and focus only on the good and the pretty and the fine and dandy, because there is such a deficit of these things in the world, especially in this day and age.
I wondered that.

Me too. I hope my post doesn't imply otherwise. I'm super proud of how people have come together to support war victims. I'm grateful to be connected with actual people instead of just horrifying news headlines, too. I tipped one of the abovementioned people (essentially we were strangers to each other) some hive to help out and he made me an nft! Lifetime treasure. Lots of amazing people on here.
