Vancouver Island - Day 1 ~ Exploring around the Oceanside

Soon after checking in to our hotel, I was curious to see what was around outdoors. So out I went for a walk, and soon stumbled upon this totem pole near the ocean. In case you didn’t know, there are plenty of totem poles on Vancouver Island. In fact, British Columbia has the most totem poles of any province in Canada. There are three tribes which are most prevalent in the area: the Haida, Tsimshian, and the Kwakwaka’Wakw (try and say that quickly 3 times). Well time to circle back to the hotel. Are totem poles unique to North America, or can they be found around the world? Thanks for stopping by.

Sort:

This one looks really tall! I think they're mostly found in that part of the world but variations of it probably exists in other parts too. I like reading the mythology associated with them. Ducks are having a good swim :)

It is interesting that the totems were only located on coastal, or near coastal areas. Wonder why that is, as the indigenous folks were living all over the continent. Thanks for stopping by.

Yes, I think not places are created equal or something of those sorts could be a reason. Coastal areas may have more affinity or receptiveness with what's been built. You're most welcome.

I think totem poles are only in north America, for sure none in Europe... I always wondered if they are really part of natives culture or just a myth/tourist thing... They are cool

An interesting part of indigenous western Canadian culture, as well as north western coastal states.

Nice! I know very little about totem poles but they are very cool! What great pictures you captured there, it looks like it was a fun trip!

Best trip of the summer by far! Many more photos to come..

My attention was drawn to the ducks, they formed a very neat line. They seemed very happy there.

Yeah, so many interesting photo ops around our hotel!

I forgot about Totem poles. Certainly a work of art.

Indeed, not the usual kind of art. Nothing quite like it!

The ducks are enjoying themselves 😊.

They always seem too!
