RE: Infrared Photography - My First Try

in Photography Lovers4 months ago (edited)

Hi @candelart,

As a quite-experimented IR photographer now, I wanted to react about this article you posted :

  • "Normal photography is no longer possible with the modified camera" : not true, you just have to use a hot-mirror filter 😉 I have a single camera, for day & night and it's the real deal 😎

  • "Of course, the images had to be post-processed on the computer" : false again, I never edit any picture at all, only resizing/cropping sometimes. Here you can see a phone pic of my camera's screen from yesterday's session :

I don't know why this idea stands in IR photographers' minds, maybe they think they HAVE to edit pictures 🙄 As I started using a camera by doing lightpainting, I wanted to keep the "No Edit" state of mind when I decided to do daylight photography. I think it's a pity to keep this wrong idea alive because it could restrain people from trying IR caption if they don't like spending time in front of a computer like me.

  • I don't understand why you have such chromatic aberrations on your pictures. Maybe it's because of the EF-Z ring you use, or because of the exotic lenses. But, the thing I really don't understand is why we can see those after you edited the pictures(!) : I don't know anything about editing but, the way I see it, it's all about correcting flaws isn't it?

I see a lot of similarities in your IR results and @lichtkunstfoto's ones. It might be cool to have a mentor when you start IR caption, you can avoid a lot of mistakes. I learnt everything of my own in IR photography so I don't know how it feels. I made tons of tryouts and errors, I was very frustrated at the begining but it helped me to understand exactly how it works, on my very own. And, the most important for me, it allowed me to create my own style I'm very proud of 👑

My two cents about it mate 😉

Hi @dawnoner,
thanks for your detailed advice. What you see here are the first attempts at IR photography. I will develop my style. Whether it will be a style that works without post-processing, I can't say yet. If you have any further tips for me, please feel free.

Hey mate,

I was reacting to affirmations which ain't true according to my own experience.

Beginings in IR photography can be rough 🤣 I remember my first steps during Ovideo's lightpainting congress back in 2016.

Of course I can give you tips if you want, but you have to tell me about your needs and the path you want to explore.
