Black & white photography – Jerònimos Monastary. Lisbon, Portugal (9 photos)

DSC_01.jpg

One of the most impressive buildings in Belem is without no doubt the Jerònimos Monastary. It is richly decorated with Manueline ornamentation and Gothic architecture. Built in 1502. One of the great Portugeese navigators was Vasco da Gama. Along with several other famous people he is burried in the church belonging to the monastary. I have chosen black and white and picked photos more focused on people visiting.

The monks who once lived here was here for the seafares who anchored close by. The monastary is only a short walk from the mouth of the Tagus river. Before an expedition the seamen could spend time here praying. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is huge! It's easy to spend hours here.

Nice photos. I visited this place 30 years ago!
I should have the negatives of my photos of that place, somewhere in my house.

Thanks :) It's an amazing building. So richly decorated. If you were there 30 years ago, that was before digital cameras... I remember how it was to come back from a holiday with lots of film rols...

It increases the quality of historical buildings.

Agree with you. It's easier to focus on details

I love taking photos of these types of buildings in different ways.

There is so many details to discover on old, historical buildings.
