Pesantren is a traditional educational institution in Aceh and Indonesia in general. As the oldest Islamic educational institution, pesantren has a central role in the life of the Acehnese people.
While studying, the students live in Islamic boarding schools. There they will study together under the guidance of a teacher or a teungku.
In Islamic boarding schools, students are not only taught Islamic religious knowledge derived from classical books, but also study general subjects as taught in schools. Therefore, every pesantren graduate usually has a better quality of knowledge than school graduates in general.
In addition, the education system in pesantren is also very disciplined, especially in practicing and practicing worship, as shown in these photos.
This is the atmosphere in one of the Islamic boarding schools in Aceh that I took some time ago. The students seemed in a hurry to perform the Zuhur prayer in congregation.
