My uncle is a cellist, my mom’s brother, and I care for him deeply. When I was starting out in photography, I took some pictures of one of his performances at a shopping mall. He liked them so much that he hired me several times afterward. This meant a lot to me, as those were some of my first photography gigs. Of course, my uncle plays classical music, and the academic music world isn’t exactly well-paid, especially not here. He couldn’t pay me much, but I’m forever grateful for his support.
Mi tío es chelista, hermano de mi mamá, y lo quiero mucho. Cuando empezaba en la fotografía, tomé algunas fotos en una presentación suya en un centro comercial. Le gustaron tanto que llegó a contratarme varias veces para hacerle fotos. Esto fue muy especial para mí, ya que se convirtieron en algunos de mis primeros trabajos como fotógrafo. Claro, mi tío se dedica a la música clásica, y el mundo de la música académica no es precisamente bien remunerado, al menos no aquí, así que no podía pagarme mucho. Aun así, siempre le estaré agradecido.
He follows a strict routine, practicing at least two hours daily. Nowadays, he performs at events and restaurants, which has led him to modify his repertoire to better appeal to these audiences. The cello, while a beautiful instrument, has its limitations: it’s not as versatile as an electric bass, nor as in demand as vocals or even some wind instruments that are more commonly seen in event settings. This naturally impacts his income.
Él tiene una rutina muy estricta; practica al menos dos horas diarias. Actualmente, toca en eventos y restaurantes, lo que lo ha llevado a adaptar su repertorio para conectar mejor con el público de estos lugares. El chelo, aunque es un instrumento hermoso, tiene ciertas limitaciones: no es tan versátil como un bajo eléctrico ni tan demandado como la voz o algunos instrumentos de viento, que suelen ser más comunes en este tipo de eventos. Despite these challenges, my uncle is an incredibly dedicated and consistent professional. Living off music isn’t easy, but he makes it work through sheer effort and passion. He’s a true inspiration to me.
