We decided to go for a walk on the Manifold Trail starting from Wetton Village in North Staffordshire, UK. The Trail is accessible to all and it is on the disused Leek and Manifold Light Railway track and along the River Manifold and through the Valley.
At Ecton Hill, we spotted an old
dovecote to the left of the tree, which we think belongs to nearby Swainsley Hall. The old structure encouraged pigeons and doves to nest in it. The birds and their eggs were an important food source for the landowners. Source
The trail took us past Thor’s Cave which is large enough to climb into and go inside. It's very slippy though and because of the mist, we couldn’t even see up on the tops.
This is what the cave would have looked like on a clearer day, with its steep entrance. It's a favourite tourist attraction so it's very rare to have the cave to yourself.
The trees looked good covered in moss. It will grow anywhere that is damp or wet.
Of course, the fungi will thrive in wet conditions also.
We carried on along the trail before returning back to Wetton Village, before the heavens opened.
