a close look at the old antiaircraft gun

behind the old cadet barracks at Fredriksvern Verft park lies a World War 2 antiaircraft gun that the Germans left behind when they evacuated Norway.

it is a "88mm Flugabwehrkanone 36 L/56 or short 8.8cm Flak 36. This anti-aircraft gun is equipped with the early version Übertragungsgerät 30 (ÜTG 30) transmission device and the improved two-piece barrel, known as Rohr Aufbau 9 (RA 9). It has the number R543 engraved on the horizontal sliding breech-block"

it is an open-air exhibit although recently it has been fenced off due to the discovery of Radium 226 in the paint. luckily i had taken this series of photos one evening around sunset in October 2023

and no, i am not concerned about any exposure to the radioactive material even though i have closely inspected the weapon numerous times

i have no particular interest in weapons or military history. however this once-dangerous, striking shiny black contraption contains lots of interesting technological details.

it is hard to imagine this bulky weapon was maneuverable enough to shoot a plane out of the sky. on the other hand, the threat of being downed by one of these must have been considerable to any attacking planes.

my mail interest is finding photographic opportunities in the details.

i took all these photos with my Samsung S22. most have been edited on the phone except the last one which was photoshopped to appear like an old faded photo.
