Today I'd like to show you the weapons used starting from the age of knights on. These weapons and objects have been found over the years on Transylvanian territory, during different archeological excavations.
The age of knights is a memorable one.
In the Early Middle Ages in Europe, knighthood was conferred upon mounted warriors. During the High Middle Ages, knighthood was considered a class of lower nobility. By the Late Middle Ages, the rank had become associated with the ideals of chivalry, a code of conduct for the perfect courtly Christian warrior. source
You most likely know what a knight looked like and what weapons they were using. Movies, video games are still using knights as characters.
There were quite a few weapons exhibited from that age and looking at them, I was trying to imagine what those poor soldiers had to go through, carrying and fighting with these heavy weapons. Imagine having a huge army or soldiers in front of you and you not only have to defend yourself but you have to defend the enemy as well. Swords, double edged swords, battle-axes. You need both your hands and a lot of strength to handle these weapons. It's amazing how well these weapons were preserved.
What you see here are armor plates, arrowheads, crossbow boltheads, spurs, spearheads and knives. Again, try to imagine an armor suit, made of those metal plates.
According to the description, these pieces date back to the 14th and 15th century. It's insane to calculate how long that time was and even more insane to see where is the defense industry now.
Speaking of heavy armors, take a pick, whichever seems more suitable to you.
Rifle bullet, early modern projectile, medieval projectile, unexploded hand grenade, 18th century mortar and so on. Now, can you guess which one is the rifle bullet? The smallest one, but even so, it seems huge.
Then the invention of gunpowder changed everything, made things easier and made targets more achievable.
This is where things started to get interesting.
You can see several types of swords, daggers, knives and all sorts of weapons I can't even name. Judging by the look of them, a good part of them were most likely just for parade, to make nobles look good. Or I could be wrong, of course.
This was the cherry on the cake. Unfortunately lack of space and glass made it impossible to take a better photo, but I took some close ups to show you how beautiful these rifles were. These are hunting rifles from the 17th century.
Unfortunately there was no additional information about the owner of the rifles, but he must have been someone important. You don't see such rifles everywhere. It must have costed a fortune.

However, it's a beautiful firearm.
Hunting was (maybe still is) the sports of the wealthy. Nobles used to hunt just for fun and I suppose having a nicely designed hunting rifle was part of the game.
Good thing visitors can't try these firearms out. Imagine the noise these would make. Anyway, it was an interesting experience, there were many nice ones.

This is really interesting to see in the same place all the evolution of the weapons and systems of protections... Even more with the apparition of guns !

Archer? Lol, interesting. I prefer peaceful times, but arching as a sport would be interesting 😀
Oh, I too prefer peaceful time for sure... But seeing me in that period of time, I wouldn't have liked to be in the melee ^^

Really tells at what distance the fight took place back in the day (face to face pretty much) and how rare is the latter to happen now. I recall a commentary from a battlefield in Ukraine saying "look at the soldiers fighting at spitting distance" while back in that day there was almost no other way of fighting. And the aesthetics have changed so much too...
Yes and this is why I said how good one must have been, imagine wearing that heavy armor and handling the heavy sword as well.
Today we have all kinds of weapons and wars are not always happen in the field.
I don't think the knights were poor. after all, there were X mercenaries who were worse off. you could write about them 😉
We have to go back in time and ask them how poor they were :)
