A night in the dark at Harboro Rocks - lightpainting on Hive

in Photography Lovers2 months ago (edited)

I've been visiting the Peak District in Derbyshire, UK for many years and thought I'd seen virtually every location there was to shoot in the dark. It seems I was mistaken. Scooting around Google maps on a lunch break, I came across Harboro Rocks further south than I normally venture. After some googling, I figured we would need to visit this epic place in the dark!

This is my 4th visit to Harboro Rocks. I find that I never fully get all I want out of a first or even second visit and that visiting multiple times, you start to come back with more refined photos as the ideas start to flow.

This is a sample of what I got from a productive night last night:

Levitation

Taking advantage of a conveniently placed plinth amongst the concrete structures, no levitation was involved in the making of this photo.

Fractal Fiery Faffery

I've bought myself a new fractal filter with this kind of thing in mind. I also find with steel sparks, less is more and here I started my exposure quite a bit later to prevent the sparks from blowing out the exposure.

Also from the same fractal filter, rotated for a different effect. I'm always in a dilemma which one is better when posting these, so you can have both!

Red Rocks

I tried to include the textures in the sky with this one, maybe not quite as successful but I do like what happened to a fractalised flashlight here.

My G!

My mate, Rob managed to tear himself away from his new girlfriend this evening and even remembered how to operate his drone! But only just! Rob was having a little difficulty lining up the circle around a central point and wasn't quite lined up correctly. So here I used a fail and a conveniently written big "G" instead.

Launch !

This was an accidental press of my shutter button which conveniently captured the launch of the drone equipped with Lumecube lights. I liked how the operator appeared double exposed.

Time to get subtle

I've been mulling over buying a drone for a while with this kind of shot in mind. The lighting looks subtle and pleasing when positioned above the landscape in the dark. I'm stilling mulling over a drone purchase because I'm convinced I'm going to crash £1000 straight out of the box!

Smoked

And finally.... I tend to shoot more than one version of a set up to give myself a bit of insurance. With this one, I wasn't as keen on the underexposed beam but the strobe lit smoke was epic!

Thanx for the "G in the Sky"
I am truly sorry I did not see it in time to rush and help you with the batteries or anything like hold the filter 😎

Haha, it's a pleasant struggle though ;-). I'm pleased to have solved my problem with the RGB LED panel running out of battery by adding an external battery pack. Just more weight to carry miles and miles in the dark!

Excellent Light works here! Thank you for sharing all this with the community. Perfect inspiration for all of us!

Thanks @lightpainters I like it when it's a productive night like last night!

Great stuff mate.

@darrenflinders Thanks pal, my bones hurt this morning after 5 hours stood in the dark lol hashtag, too old for this stuff

Lol I know that feeling mate, they seem to hurt more when it's colder too.

Great location and great results here mate. I use a 300€ drone. Good enough to mount two Lumintop GT Nano Pro. 😁

Cheers mate, it's like buying a first car as a teenager. I'll buy a cheap one and crash it for practice haha

As always, great performances!

Broh... you need a great deal more exposure!!

These photos are amazing!!

Thanks @technicalside I’ve suspected for a while I don’t seem to get much from social media. I just do this stuff for myself 😎😂

The thing with social is all those likes and stuff are just bought😅🤪

Keep cracking at it, I'd like to see so much more!!
