I regularly scan the weather apps to see any hints of mist or fog. On Sunday morning, one weather app said clouds and no mist but another said fog. I don't trust these apps for the inconsistency but decided to take a chance and headed out to the Peak District in Derbyshire.
We arrived at Padley Gorge expecting to enjoy a morning of twisty gnarly trees in the mist. Except when we arrived, everyone else had had the same idea! Not a parking space to be found anywhere!
So Plan B came in to effect and off we went to Bolehill Quarry. Or so we thought. Turns out we entered in the wrong place and probably walked a mile in the wrong direction before arriving where we were supposed to be.
These style of images are maybe a bucket list image. Right light, right misty conditions and me turning up at the same time!
The following were all shot in the space of around 3 hours, a productive morning!
Twisted
I got the best shots at the end of the walkabout. By the time I shot this scene, I was getting pretty tired and gradually wandering back in the direction of my car. It was a long walk back due to spotting yet more compositions! This twisted tree stood out from the crowd!
Bucket list stuff
I once visited a photo exhibition in a cathedral where prints were offered for sale. One was 12 feet long x 7 feet high and was on sale for £1200! This is pretty much exactly the same thing and here it's free. But if anyone wants to pay me £1200 for it then feel free to get in touch!
Dry Stone Wall
I visited this woodland with a friend and we managed to get separated amongst the trees. I was in no rush so every few metres I kept on spotting more compositions such as this leading line of dry stone walling.
Down the lane
As I wandered in what I thought was the right direction I kept tripping over compositions. This path with fog overhead caught my eye.
Hilly
As I wandered further in to the woods, the terrain became gradually more hilly. I love the curve from left to right in this one.
Lost not lost
So it turns out getting lost in woodland is not a bad thing. Finding a composition in seemingly endless woodland is not easy. I spotted this leaning which broke the uniformity so again I stopped and took a shot.
Bright
As I reached the top of the hill, the sun broke through the mist.
Compostions
It's not easy to find a composition amongst the tangle of trees. The twisted pair on the left and the light on the grass created a direction in the frame so I went with that.
Save as Desktop Picture
The uniformity in a chaotic woodland makes for a great 16 x 9 format Desktop Picture.
The Long Walk Back
On the path back to the car, these grinding stones were stacked against each other in quite a photogenic way. The mist behind was creating rays and I just about managed to catch them, not easy.
By this point I was dead on my feet after walking for three hours, so in the bag the camera went and a stumble back to the car!
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in landscape, urbex and artistic model photography. I like to collaborate with other photographers and occasionally shoot outside my comfort zone.

Down the lane - always love a path leading off into the distance!
Thanks @shanibeer, it was a crazy target rich morning!
It was a pure pleasure to read this post. That I think I liked the last one the most of all the photos. I like them for how the tree closes the upper part of the frame creating a closed space and the whole thing is nicely organized in the frame. Of course, I like all the pictures. Best regards!
Thanks very much @inmyframe I quite like writing the blog almost as much as taking the photos. I'm sat here at work trying to concentrate on a Monday morning but these shots were a big dopamine hit haha
Haha I understand you very well. Photography adds energy. Sometimes it stimulates better than three coffees at once 😄
Fog always gives a sense of mysticism and is a great element for spectacular photos like these. 😍
Thanks @mballesteros it's rare you'll find me in the right place at the right time ;-)
It's not rare; we're in a small ecosystem, and if we have the same tastes, it's likely that sooner or later we'll meet. :D
That's a great thought @mballesteros thanks :-)
Your photographs look like they're straight out of a magical storybook, with fairies, princes, and even dragons🤭 What a beautiful place 🤩
Thanks @tatawa these misty conditions were perfect for photography :-)
