On a rainy and lonely day like today, I would like to share with the community a series of pictures I never had the chance to share yet, and they make me feel hopeful and just better inside, as they are from last Summer, during the first day of June.
It is almost a tradition that my friend Massimiliano made, to spend the long weekend during the National holiday of June 2nd (Italian Republic Anniversary Celebration) in Calabria, a region in the south of Italy, where my friend has a beach house near some wonderful places.
Last year, in particular, it was the four of us: Massimiliano and his girlfriend, and me with my boyfriend. We took a long way by car to arrive there starting from Rome, but then we spent some amazing days together. I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday there with them, because by a nice coincidence, I was born on June 2nd, which is to me a real pride.
In these first shots, in particular, you are looking at the beautiful spots of the well-known Tropea, the town of the famous violet onion. We were so lucky to get there for a beautiful sunset, after which we went to enjoy the special aperitif at a local small restaurant where we always go.

You should, however, that Tropea is an extremely touristic small town on the beautiful sea of Calabria, and it can get extremely crowded! So here's a tip for you: the best period of the year to go there and being able to really enjoy the panorama, the food, the beauty of the sea and the beach is early Summer, just like we did, or late Summer/early Fall.
We walked around Tropea for a little bit, enjoying the cool vibes of the town not so crowded yet, the flea markets, the first lights of the restaurants and bars... some sort of magical atmosphere indeed.
Due to the uncertain weather, we didn't have the chance to spend the whole time at the various beach places around, but this, instead, was the best occasion to go visit a new city we had never seen before: Reggio Calabria!
I'm sure most of you are familiar with the famous "Bronzi di Riace", the two colloas and marvelous bronze statues found on the seabed of Riace, a town near Reggio Calabria. I suggest everyone to take some time to go to the museum to admire them in person, because no art history book or google image could ever provide you with the indescribable feeling that only standing in front of them can do.
Consider that the statues were made between 460-430 a.C., they're around 198cm tall and each one weighs about 160kg. The artist who sculpted these two unprecedent statues is still unknown; it's incredible to see how the bronze was labored, almost like it was easy to sculpt and work.
The details of the veins, the surfaces of the abs and hip, the muscles and the skin folds are so well defined and incredibly realistic that the bronze doesn't look like it anymore; walking around the statues you get the feeling that these two men are real, human, and they're about to get off from the podium they were placed, and walk on their own, like they are animated.
I was impressed particularly from the way the veins on the arms and hands are visible and stand from the surface, just like the skin of an athlete after a workout.

After the visit of the museum, we took some time to explore the town of Reggio Calabria. Along the seafront walk, we came across another work of art, this time a contemporary one, made by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi.
Artist Edoardo Tresoldi uses wire mesh to make artworks directly connected with the landscapes and environment where the works are placed, giving the transparency of their works a subtle meaning linked to both the work and its surrounding. His art is pretty cool and is getting very popular both in Italy and abroad.

I have to say, Reggio was full of art everywhere we would walk, and honestly this made me very happy and satisfied, considering that I wanted to spend the day on the beach instead. This was a worthy way to make up for it!
Ancient and modern is easily visible as very close to each other, as well as religious and profane. All in this city calls freedom of expression, will to revoke and appreciate the past, but keeping the gaze ahead to the future.
Our following destination was Scilla, another beautiful town on the sea. Scilla is very different from Reggio and Tropea: it's way smaller, it's more like a small gem to pass by, than an actual town to visit.
The viewpoint terrace will take your breath away as much as walking among the small colorful alleys of the old town.
Just like every small town in Italy, Scilla is very well curated by the locals, and everywhere you can see beautiful little objects as adornment of courtyards, lovely flowerbeds, and special niches from which you can glimpse the blue dinghies on the shore.

We all fell in love with this tiny lovely town, but eventually we had to walk back and say goodbye both to Reggio and Scilla. We took a million pictures, and spent some time enjoying the silence of the town, the piece of the sea, and the beauty of the colorful walls. Sometimes a cat was there relaxing too, or an old lay was walking back home to make a special supper... everything I remember was just perfect in that moment.

In una giornata piovosa e solitaria come oggi, vorrei condividere con la comunità una serie di immagini che non ho mai avuto la possibilità di condividere ancora, e mi fanno sentire piena di speranza e semplicemente meglio dentro, perché risalgono all'estate scorsa, durante i primi giorni di giugno.
È quasi una tradizione che il mio amico Massimiliano porta avanti, quella di trascorrere il lungo weekend della festa nazionale del 2 giugno (festa della Repubblica Italiana) in Calabria, una regione del sud Italia, dove il mio amico ha una casa al mare vicino ad alcuni posti meravigliosi.
L'anno scorso, in particolare, eravamo in quattro: Massimiliano e la sua ragazza, e io con il mio ragazzo. Abbiamo fatto un lungo viaggio in macchina per arrivare lì partendo da Roma, ma poi abbiamo trascorso insieme delle giornate bellissime. Ho avuto la fortuna di festeggiare lì il mio compleanno con loro perché, per una bella coincidenza, sono nata proprio il 2 giugno, il che per me è un vero orgoglio.
In questi primi scatti, in particolare, state osservando gli splendidi angoli della famosissima Tropea, la città della celeberrima cipolla viola. Siamo stati molto fortunati ad arrivare lì con uno splendido tramonto, dopo il quale siamo andati a goderci l'aperitivo speciale in un ristorantino locale dove andiamo sempre.

Dovreste però tenere presente che Tropea è una cittadina estremamente turistica sullo splendido mare della Calabria, e può diventare particolarmente affollata e invivible! Quindi ecco un consiglio per voi: il periodo migliore dell'anno per andarci e poter godere davvero del panorama, del cibo, della bellezza del mare e della spiaggia è l'inizio dell'estate, proprio come abbiamo fatto noi, oppure la fine dell'estate/inizio autunno
Abbiamo passeggiato un po' per Tropea, godendoci l'atmosfera inebriante della città non ancora così affollata, i mercatini, le prime luci dei ristoranti e dei bar... una sorta di magica atmosfera davvero.
A causa del meteo incerto, non abbiamo avuto la possibilità di trascorrere tutto il tempo nelle varie spiagge nei dintorni, ma questa, invece, è stata l'occasione migliore per andare a visitare una nuova città che non avevamo mai visto: Reggio Calabria!
Sono sicura che molti di voi conoscono i famosi "Bronzi di Riace", le due mastodontiche e meravigliose statue in bronzo rinvenute sui fondali di Riace, cittadina vicino a Reggio Calabria. Consiglio a tutti di prendersi un po' di tempo per andare al museo per ammirarli di persona, perché nessun libro di storia dell'arte o immagine google potrà mai darvi la sensazione indescrivibile che solo stare di fronte a loro può dare.
Considerate che le statue sono state realizzate tra il 460-430 a.C., sono alte circa 198 cm e ciascuna pesa circa 160 kg. L’artista che scolpì queste due meravigliose statue è ancora sconosciuto; è incredibile vedere come è stato lavorato il bronzo, quasi come se fosse facile scolpirlo e lavorarlo.
I dettagli delle vene, delle superfici degli addominali e dei fianchi, dei muscoli e delle pieghe della pelle sono così ben definiti e incredibilmente realistici che il bronzo non sembra più bronzo; camminando tra le statue si ha la sensazione che questi due uomini siano reali, umani, e stiano per scendere dal podio su cui sono stati collocati per iniziare a camminare da soli, come se fossero animati.
Mi ha colpito particolarmente il modo in cui le vene delle braccia e delle mani siano così visibili e risaltano dalla superficie della pelle, proprio come la pelle di un atleta dopo un allenamento.

Dopo la visita del museo, ci siamo presi un po' di tempo per esplorare la città di Reggio Calabria. Lungo la passeggiata sul lungomare, ci siamo imbattuti in un'altra opera d'arte, questa volta contemporanea, realizzata dall'artista italiano Edoardo Tresoldi.
L'artista Edoardo Tresoldi utilizza la rete metallica per realizzare opere direttamente connesse con i paesaggi e l'ambiente in cui le opere sono collocate, conferendo alla trasparenza delle loro opere un significato sottile legato sia all'opera che all'ambiente circostante. La sua arte è piuttosto interessante e sta diventando molto popolare sia in Italia che all'estero.
Ecco un articolo sull'installazione a Reggio Calabria nel caso in cui siate molto curiosi riguardo questa specifica opera d'arte.
Devo dire che Reggio era piena di arte ovunque andassimo a passeggiare, e sinceramente questo mi rendeva molto felice e soddisfatta, considerando che avrei voluto invece passare la giornata in spiaggia. Questo è stato un modo degno di rimediare!
Antico e moderno sono facilmente visibili in quanto molto vicini tra loro, così come anche il religioso e il profano. Tutto in questa città richiama libertà di espressione, volontà di rievocare e valorizzare il passato, ma mantenendo lo sguardo rivolto al futuro.
La nostra destinazione successiva era Scilla, un'altra bellissima cittadina sul mare. Scilla è molto diversa da Reggio e Tropea: è molto più piccola, sembra più un piccolo gioiello da godersi per un attimo, piuttosto che una vera e propria cittadina piena di cose da scoprire e visitare.
La terrazza panoramica vi lascerà senza fiato tanto quanto passeggiare tra i piccoli vicoli colorati del centro storico.
Proprio come ogni piccola città d'Italia, Scilla è molto ben curata dalla gente del posto, e ovunque si possono vedere bellissimi piccoli oggetti che adornano i cortili, deliziose aiuole e nicchie speciali da cui è possibile intravedere le barchette blu dei pescatori ferme sulla riva del mare.

Ci siamo tutti innamorati di questa piccola e adorabile cittadina, ma alla fine siamo dovuti tornare indietro e dire addio sia a Reggio che a Scilla. Abbiamo scattato un milione di foto e abbiamo trascorso un po' di tempo godendoci il silenzio della città, lo specchio di mare e la bellezza delle pareti colorate. A volte c'era anche un gatto che si rilassava, o una vecchietta che tornava a casa per preparare una cena speciale... tutto quello che ricordo era semplicemente perfetto in quel momento.
