Above the Clouds

I'm back home after a week of traveling and almost 2 weeks of staying home with my family for Christmas and NYE. I wasn't on here much during this time, but now I'm back and I'm looking forward to being active again! For starters, here's a little teaser image for this post about a hike above the clouds.

So even though I’m fairly often in the mountains by now, I haven’t witnessed many cloud inversions yet. This is why I remember the few I saw very fondly. This one happened in 2019 on the last day of October, and the last day before this hike was possible without snow.

We got up that day fairly late. Then, we saw on a webcam that there’s a cloud inversion on this hike I already did in complete fog a couple of weeks before. We immediately drove to the mountains under an overcast sky. The start of the hike was foggy, too.

But as we made our way up, the fog slowly got lighter.

And when we finally made it above the clouds, it was pure bliss.

The hike lead us to a hut, and because it was the end of the season, we didn’t plan for it to be open. And actually, the owner of the hut was busy preparing the hut for winter and it was not open anymore. However, he let us stay inside the hut to wait a bit longer for sunset. It was colder than expected for us so we were very happy we could stay inside one or two hours to wait for better light. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a spectacular sunset but we got a little colored light on the horizon.

We then spent blue hour hiking all the way down. Even though we started late, we didn’t plan on returning so late and didn’t bring any headlamps. Luckily, phones have torch lights by now, and we just made it back to the car before it was pitch black.
