Conducting a photo shoot at night might be a little daunting for some photographers. This is because, in addition to having to use a wide aperture on the lens, it is often necessary to use a slow shutter speed and increase the ISO to ensure the photos are perfectly exposed. This can result in noise in the resulting photos, which can be very disturbing and can detract from the sharpness of the image for some photographers. However, for others, photos with noise have their own artistic value.
A slow shutter speed can also cause photos to experience some shake, thereby reducing the sharpness of the image. However, with increasingly advanced technology, modern cameras now have IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) up to 7-8 stops, which is very helpful when using a slow shutter speed for night photography.
For me personally, capturing images at night is quite enjoyable, as I can play around with flash or use RGB lights to help shape the ambiance or create different moods in the photos I take. Personally, I enjoy working with flash because the light emitted from the flash itself is relatively stable, ensuring that the white balance between one photo and another tends to be the same.
Technically, when using artificial light, whether it's flash or RGB light, we can adjust the white balance (WB) on the camera using Kelvin. This is done to create the same WB between one photo and another. We can freely adjust this Kelvin towards a cooler or warmer tone according to the concept we desire. This is one of the advantages of using artificial light.
Below are some photos I took at night using a single Godox Lux senior flash:
The concept of this photo was actually meant to showcase an "old money" fashion theme, but I feel like it slightly deviated from the theme due to the limitations of the outfits we had available. As a result, we only used the available outfits and combined them to maintain the semblance of the initial desired concept. Ideally, I should have used some accessories such as a classic watch to enhance the old money impression. However, that wasn't an issue because these photos were taken just for fun.
Regarding the technical aspect of the shoot, I attempted several times to use a slow shutter speed to capture the model's movements. However, since the model wasn't accustomed to executing rapid and coordinated movement poses, I failed to capture photos using that technique. Even though I set the shutter speed to 1/30 and adjusted the flash to capture the movement, it still wasn't successful.
Consequently, the photos I managed to take were relatively straightforward, just guiding the model through some poses, as seen in the images above. I have included some of the other photos below.
For me, conducting a photo session at night isn't difficult as long as there is proper lighting. We can play around with the ambiance or employ direct flash towards the model. Lately, I've come across many trendy photos employing the technique of shooting light directly from the flash towards the model. These photos actually represent a characteristic style from the past, as during the night, it can be quite dark, making the use of the available flash on point-and-shoot cameras a preferred choice to ensure the subject is clearly visible. Apparently, this trend has gained popularity again, as many young people nowadays are leaning towards film photography and using pocket point-and-shoot cameras, causing these techniques to go viral and become a trend.
One downside of the flash I use is its large size. Although it has a unique vintage design, using it in crowded places might draw too much attention. It might be suitable for someone who enjoys being the center of attention, but it's not quite my style. I might consider replacing it with a smaller flash to avoid being too conspicuous during photo shoots. As for the flash settings, they are all manual, so it's necessary to have some understanding of how to use it before heading out into the field.
I think that's enough for my post this time. I'll share more of my work another time. Thank you to those who have stopped by here. Don't forget to continue supporting my content.
