No wonder Mdina is known as the Silent City, almost nobody lives within its massive stone walls and tiny narrow cobbled streets. Visiting it at night could drive one crazy, I guess. However, I stopped by in a hot Mediterranean summer day so I could admire its monumental beauty and enjoy its hospitable cooling shade. Founded and fortified about 28 centuries ago, Mdina is one of the oldest European cities. Regardless the earthquake in 1693 that destroyed most of its buildings, you can still feel the spirit of almost three millenniums there. Six, if you take into consideration that the oldest proven settlement in this location was established in around 4000 BC.
Není divu, že se Mdině říká Tiché město. Mezi jejími masivními zdmi v úzkých dlážděných uličkách skoro nikdo nežije. Noční procházka by mohla být pěkně děsivá. Ale já se sem dostal v horkém středomořském dni, a tak jsem mohl v pohostinném stínu kamenných zdí obdivovat monumentálnost Mdiny. Ta je jedním z nejstarších evropských měst, založena a poprvé opevněna byla už pře 28 stoletími. A když zemětřesení v roce 1693 zničilo většinu budov, stále tu na vás dýchají tři tisíce let historie. Respektive šest, když vezmete v potaz, že nejstarší místní osídlení je doložené až k roku 4000 př. n. l.
Would you expect a monumental gate? This one is a little disappointment, then. No place for fanciness, though. Mdina has always been a fortress in the first place. Yet the fresh green grass is something you’d hardly find anywhere else in Malta, at least in summer.
Čekali byste nějakou monumentální bránu? Tak to vás tahle zklame. Ale důležité bylo hlavně bezpečí - Mdina byla vždycky v prvé řadě pevnost a až pak město. Ale ta krásně zelená tráva je něco, co byste jinak na Maltě těžko hledali. Alespoň v létě.

Some of the prestigious villas that belonged to noblemen and/or the Church representatives. Since Malta was governed by the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in its prime, those two categories merge.
Několik honosných domů, které patřily šlechtě a/nebo církevním představitelům. Protože Malta prožila svůj zlatý věk pod vládou katolického Řádu maltézských rytířů, tyhle dvě kategorie splývají do jedné.

You can take a traditional Maltese horse-drawn carriage if you’re lazy to walk, there’s a spot to hire it just in front of the gate. However, I believe you’d enjoy the place more just wandering around and listening to the silence.
Jestli se vám nechce chodit, můžete si najmout tradiční maltskou drožku, postávají hned před branou. Ale myslím, že si Mdinu víc užijete po svých, když se budete jen tak toulat kolem a užívat si ticha.
