Camera Rotation Exercise - with my Foam Roller

Using random things in the apartment to practice Camera Rotation Light Painting

Since the entire Covid19 Lockdown lifestyle I started looking at the apartment in a different way. These days I keep looking at things as potential photo exercise subjects. So I started Eyeing this foam roller and was wondering what that would look like in a camera rotation. So that one night it was time to stage it with some fiber optic light painting with a twist.

Not that bad for some random subject I thought.

What were the settings for the main shot?

What you see is a featured Camera Rotation Light Painting is a single 365-second exposure time photograph. The camera was always set to ISO 100 and the Lens to F20.

In order to see something of the graffiti on the walls in the foreground, I lit it up on each side of the rotation. It required twelve steps for the complete rotation.

What's the process?

At first, as always I had a quick light scan of 13 seconds to look at the foam roller on the rubber ball. Looked pretty cool with the texture and black shadows.

Since I was going for lots of contrast I went for F20 and stronger light. Once I got that I could move for the camera rotation. This time I was hoping to melt a few of them into each other so I went for twelve steps.

Next Phase Rotation?

Once I know how the Light scene works I did the rotation but no color.

It took me like two or three attempts to get the proper rotation with some cool black fiber optic effect to get this result. Pretty satisfying to be honest. 😎

Then just add some colors for the featured shot?

Here is one of the test shots that meant more to do it again. If you have a closer look you see that's my hand showing up. Of course, that was not intended. To avoid that I simply had to rotate my hand so it would not be lit from that side towards the camera.

Then it was easy to add color and my cover shot was done, which you can see at the very beginning.

Camera Rotation what?

As I described also in my last post about Camera Rotation it is just what you think. During the exposure, the camera is being turned in a few angles and while doing so I also light up the scene. Everything together and in one exposure without any trickery.

Kamera Rotation Light Painting?

You are so welcome @gunnarheilmann 😎
Thank you kindly.
Enjoy your weekend too! 👋🏻

These are always awesome results. Do you have a device to rotate the stabilizer automatically, or do you rotate the camera manually as well?

Most panorama heads have these preset nob positions that give haptic feedback when you turn them. You can select different angles per rotation you are going for. Makes it relatively simple yet there are not so perfect so you will have to practice a bit. Sometimes you see that the angle is not perfect. Especially when you have 180° you will see easily when it's off by 2° already. So what I usually do is; I start on the upside down position then use the internal lever from the camera display and make the camera come back to the normal position where I know it is coming back perfectly horizontal. So backward choreography.

Nice light flower!! 🌺
Thank you for all the details of the process, that's really appreciated!! Great Job!

I had to disconnect from the chain for a couple of weeks, and I missed those amazing and interesting paintings. I am happy so see them again :)

Have a nice week-end!

No worries. The beauty is that most of the stuff stays on the chain. ;-)
Welcome back!
