Chaotic Simplicity - Light up Sheffer

Fiber Optic Light Painting Portrait Session

Not every night works out as planned. With only two hours at hand, I wanted to walk away at least with one Light Painting. If under pressure we all fall back to the technique we think we can handle and like. For me, that is the black fiber optic brush. In the last weeks and months not being able to light paint was bothering me so this turned in parts into a therapy session. It was so nice to finally produce some images.

This night I spend with Sheffer, yes that's her name. She is a model from Ukraine. The world has turned crazy for her, we all can assume that much. Long story short it is helping her and me. We helped one another. It is not the normal dynamic during shooting if you have that kind of looming dragon flying over but we managed to get some images.

What was the setup?

What you see as Light Painting is a single 83 loooooong exposure time photograph. The camera was set to ISO 100 and the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 lens was set to F11.

Yes, but how?

Throughout the process Didi was standing at the exact same spot for all the 212 seconds of the exposure. I used the scanner to light her up. After that I was rotating the camera only 30°. Then she chose a new pose for the next scan. The camera was open for the entire process so what you see is not a composite image but one with no Photoshop effects.

Here you see the fiber optic brushes I used to get the fire trails in the image. You can visit my page to see more about this technique.

The Tools

For these images, I used the black fiber brush and a scanner, both with white light only. As simple as it gets.

I used the scanner on the left to shine some light over her body before adding the fiber optic brush for additional features.

Step 1

Just a quick test. Scan the hair and the back of her.

Schritt 1

Schnell mit dem Scanner einmal einleuichten.

Step 2

Like always I add the fiber optic effects usually at the end. So I did here to make sure I have her still not moving during the exposure. At first, I was only testing some shapes, but I was not as creative so I stuck with some basic shapes.

Here I was going for a wing-like effect to make her; light.

Schritt 2

Actually not as complicated as you may think. If you like to try that technique you can visit my website and see what inspires you.

I hope you found these images inspirational. If you have more questions please do not hesitate. I am happy to share my knowledge.

If you think this is Spam, why did you read this far and why the fuck bother! Move on from your self-righteous mind state and bury yourself. Don't bother about what others may find interesting. Just stay in your bubble and ...

All there is left to say is Cheer Up!
