Night Walk in the Forest

in Photography Lovers3 years ago (edited)

Of course, I had my camera and my rotation tool with me.

Not the most comfortable night but relatively dark. It was just before Easter so the moon came up early and then there was a bit of rain. This did not hold me back to grab the camera bag and some lights. I knew it would not go for long so don't expect anything fancy tool-wise.

Just like my Light Painting friend Sven aka @lichtkunstfoto would say an Orb is always a possibility. For the main shot, I Swung the circular light blade around to create this orb.

But as you see there is more. I'll explain to you how I got there step by step.

What happened to get the featured shot like this

What were the settings?

What you see is a featured Light Painting is a single 269 second long-exposure time photograph. The camera was always set to ISO 100 and the Canon 16-35mm fixed to an apperature of F8.

Step 1

Getting comfortable with the scene and in particular the ambient light situation. This I need to figure out my settings. Of course, I started with a wild guess based on my experience.

Something F8 and ISO 100 should work right? And it did.

Schritt 1

Step 2

Of course I tested some colors. The blue did not really serve the scene in my opinion.

Schritt 2

Silhouette also wasn't going to work either since I was alone myself.

Step 3 Camera Rotation

What did work nicely was the orb and the Camera Rotation in a combination? So I got my main shot and was pretty happy with it.

Schritt 3 Kamera Rotation

Camera Rotation what?

Yes, it is exactly what you think. During the exposure, the camera is being turned in a few angles and while doing so I also light up the scene. Everything together and in one exposure without any trickery.

Kamera Rotation Was?

If you are interested in this technique, not too long ago I wrote up an article on the topic. It has been published on my website and here on Hive as a blog post.

Camera Rotation belongs certainly to Kinetic photography and it is not a very common technique amongst photographers. Light Paintings are choreographed movements with light tools carried out with the camera during a single exposure. During a Camera Rotation, the light sources are often in a fixed position about the camera, and the light trails are then drawn into the picture solely by the camera movements.

As always I hope you found these images inspirational. If you have more questions please do not hesitate. I am happy to share my knowledge.

If you think this is Spam, why did you read this far and why the fuck bother! Move on from your self-righteous mind state and bury yourself. Don't bother about what others may find interesting. Just stay in your bubble and ...

Cool Gunnar. 🤣

Nicht schön aber selten ;-)
Freut mich wenns ein bisschen gefällt.

Thanks for the info on this creatively interesting and technical process. These shots turned out fantastic. I love that last one in particular. Great job.

I wasn't sure if I should make it two posts - because I also love the last one very much. Almost as much or maybe even a bit more than the first one. It is more subtle and tasty, but not flashy enough to catch an eye in a stream of many images. Thank you for your support.

I'm glad you added it here... and we will see about if it's flashy enough! hahaha
