Sparklers, the Milkyway, and Pink Sand Dunes
Definitely, one of the coolest locations I have been Light Painting is Utah and Arizona. So many good memories. A lot of those are closely connected to Light Painting adventures.
Just outside Kanab is the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. The name says it all. The sand has an amazing pink tint depending on how the light hits it.
My featured shot is of a friend I got to know actually further southeast at White Pocket. many know that's one of my favorite places on this planet. Ok back to Ingrid. Ingrid the model in this image was a photoguide we met guiding a Korean couple during the sunset in the desert. We arrived and she was asking what we going to do. I said Light Painting. Joining in the action, and 3 days later we are still light painting some spots in the area. So much fun making new friends that get the bug of Light Painting. Getting some good advice on the hidden gems is priceless. Thank you so much Ingrid for sharing all these adventures with us.
FYI she also helped then a year later in organizing the Meteor Jam at White Pocket.
So viele schöne Erinnerungen.
Sparkly Nymph
This is not a layered Photoshop creation. This is really done in-camera.
What you see here as the featured Light Painting really is a single 150 second exposure time Light Painting photograph. The camera was always set to ISO 3200 and the Lens to F22 then F2.8
Here is the full image without the cover crop
I let you in on a little secret. Assuming you may not have read all my posts I repeat the trick to get this shot. In order to get the Milkyway and some fireworks in the same exposure, you need an analog manual lens. That way you can change the F-Stop during the exposure. The better the lens the better the shot. What means "better" here? Fo a good shot you want a lens that does the least amount of focus breathing. I hope you are familiar with that. If not there are a lot of videos on it on Youtube. In short: When you change the Aperature the opening angle of the lens should not change. This is defiantly a problem if you try that with a zoom lens. If you have a fixed focus lens it's usually not a problem.
This is to test the second phase of the exposure. The Lens was set to F2.8 only open for 30 seconds with the Camera at ISO 3200. Just like the featured image. Then we are ready to start with the sparklers and Ingrid.
Only realized at home that I could have started the shot 2h earlier. I thought we not going to see the Milkyway that early ... This really just coming out of the camera like this. Anyhow in Arizona and Utah you get such a clear sky the Milkyway and the stars are almost unobstructed by light pollution.
Yes, I did take the drone. Here is a quick impression of what the area looks like during the day.
Disclaimer: back in the days when I got the drone shots there was not even any rule set in place not to fly in national / state parks. So back then it was ok.
Not sure if i would go through the hassle of applying for a permit.
Everywhere you find these amazing pockets of sand dunes to shoot. Love it!
I hope you found these images inspirational. If you have more questions please do not hesitate. I am happy to share my knowledge.

Cool. Let me get this straight. You met a random guide and within a short period she was naked? ;-) Go Gunnar!
She asked politely "do you have issues with nudity?" Do we? So that happend.
This never happens to me.... 😂
This happend so many times ... I dont think of me as a perv. Must be trustful shy looks and my harmless puppy eyes apparently...
Haha I just assumed it was your silver tongued sales technique...
I really did not ask for any parts of her dress to be removed. She asked me nicely if i could ... Then we tried that.
At least she asked. Would have been funny if you set up camera, prepared everything and all of the sudden she stands there posing nude 😂
Hope she didn't get burned.
Think the shadow is a bit strange, cause the sparks appear to be behind her but the shadow goes in the same direction. Shadow to the other side or something to the left of her crating that shadow would look more natural.
You are absolutely right. Apprently she moved during this shot. I took another one right afterr that, which was better but that one was published here about 2 years agot. Since I not try to post anything twice (because thatvwould be against ... ) i chose this one. So far I managed to not repeat here. Unless i did not notice. Some ppl do that ... Not me anyhow.
Also i did not really intent to get the shadow of her at all. But then ... A second to long ... Did not really see it until i was onbthe PC ... Then I did not wanted to manipulate the image to hide it. I should have done it more from the side. But then the wide angle lens would have made me walk far to the left ... Anyhow too many excuses. Haha means I have to go again... And i will
Well got a reason to go back now. 😄
Looks great the way it is, but I spot this kind of stuff all the time so thought I mention it.
Very impressive shot Gunnar.
Thank you Mista ... Glad you like it. Milky Way shots are so simple there. Its a shame we have so much light pollution here.
Great post with amazing shots as always. Thanks for sharing with us your camera settings :)
You are very welcome. Also your support is very important and hugely appreciated 🙏

Sehr schöner Artikel.
Dankesehr Frau Singer 😏
Schönen Sonntag noch 😎
Dir auch.
I cannot decide what is my preferred part of the picture. The landscape, the lightnings around the model or the sky.
As a matter of fact (and as a side remark), such a picture would have been perfect to illustrate the post I prepare for this week (the topic is dark matter). That is however a bit too late to set that up as I post regularly at lunch time on Mondays. Maybe for another time, if you are interested of course.
Thank you so much. For me its similar, yet the image has a lot going on but is still simplistic enough not to be an eyesore. There is a lot to explore.
If you want use the image with a credit and link would be just fine .. no I would like that in fact.
That's a cool news. I keep it in mind for my next post on dark matter, as this is a recurrent topic in my posts. I will obviously credit the image and share a link (as I do for any image used in my posts). Thanks for accepting!
awesome shts
thanx mate ;-)
