Camera Rotation & Light Painting of Historic Buildings.

Over the past weeks I have not been out much, meeting people even less so. Work is super interesting as I would say diplomatically. Last week though I had a beautiful walk in the park near by the New Palace. So I decided to bring the camera and stop to see what could be created on my way home. The park of interest was off-limits because it was closed too early. Sanssouci Park would have been a treasure for photography at night. It is an expansive park in Potsdam, just southwest of Berlin, created under the reign of Frederick the Great. It served P..extension for the king from tough courtly life I guess.

The park is famous for its magnificent garden landscapes, characterized by baroque and romantic elements. It encompasses not only the New Palace but also the famous Sanssouci Palace, the Charlottenhof Palace, and numerous pavilions, grottos, and statues.

In den letzten Wochen war ich nicht viel unter Leuten. Die Arbeit ist zur Zeit sehr 'interessant', wenn ich diplomatisch sagen müsste. Letzte Woche hatte ich jedoch einen wunderschönen Spaziergang in einem Park in der Nähe des Neuen Palais. Also beschloss ich, die Kamera einzupacken und auf dem Rückweg dort mal zu schauen, ob es dort zwei Bilder für mich gibt. Der eigentlich interessante Park war leider schon gesperrt, weil schon dunkel. Der Sanssouci-Park wäre nachts ein Juwel für die Fotografie gewesen. Er ist ein weitläufiger Park in Potsdam, etwas südwestlich von Berlin. Der Park diente war sicher nur Friedrichs Pe..isverlängerung. Der von barocken und romantischen Elementen geprägte Park ist berühmt für seine prächtigen Gartenanlagen. Er umfasst nicht nur das Neue Palais, sondern auch das berühmte Schloss Sanssouci, das Lustschloss Charlottenhof und zahlreiche Pavillons, Grotten und Statuen.

It smells Power

Frederick II, also known as Frederick the Great, was the King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786. He was a significant political and military leader and is often regarded as one of the most outstanding monarchs of the 18th century. The New Palace was built between 1763 and 1769 under the direction of architect Johann Gottfried Büring. It served as the residence of Frederick the Great and as a representative venue for royal events and receptions. Super impressive grounds. Here you'll see some shots that came easily to me. I did not spend too much time at this spot and concentrated on some simple camera rotation and maybe helping some darker areas to be lit up for more dynamic.

Friedrich II., auch bekannt als Friedrich der Große, war von 1740 bis 1786 König von Preußen. Somit einer der bedeutenden politisch und militärisch Führer und wird oft als einer der herausragendsten Monarchen des 18. Jahrhunderts angesehen. Das Neue Palais wurde zwischen 1763 und 1769 unter der Leitung des Architekten Johann Gottfried Büring errichtet. Es diente als Residenz Friedrichs des Großen und als repräsentativer Veranstaltungsort für königliche Ereignisse und Empfänge. Hier seht Ihr einige Aufnahmen, die mir leicht gefallen sind. Ich habe nicht zu viel Zeit verbracht und mich auf einfache Kamerarotationen konzentriert und vielleicht einige dunklere Bereiche beleuchtet, um mehr Dynamik zu erzeugen.

The New Palace

Since I came here I had to get at least one photograph of the actual New Place. As you see the glare on the right-hand side you can imagine what kind of shit pile of lights they put up. Impossible to make it not blow out. Funny thing; all that light was directed to the kitchen quarters behind me. Anyhow that felt kind of stupid and not helpful for Light Painting.

What you see is a simple 25-second single exposure Camera Rotation with two steps 180° apart. During the first step, I covered half of the lens with my hat then rotated the camera and left it all open. That's why you see some features of the cobblestone road in the foreground mixing with the second sky.
The Camera was set to ISO 800 and my LAOWA Zero D 12mm lens was set to F11 if i remember correctly.

Wenn ich schon mal hier bin, muss ich wohl mindestens ein Foto vom eigentlichen Neuen Palais machen. Wie Ihr seht, gibts ein Haufen Lichtverschmutzung von rechts. Unmöglich, Bilder nicht auszubrennen. Lustigerweise war all dieses Licht auf die Küchenquartiere hinter mir gerichtet. Wie auch immer, irgendwie dumm und sicher nicht hilfreich für Light Painting.

Was Ihr hier seht, ist eine einfache Kamera Rotation mit 25-Sekunden-Belichtungszeit in zwei Schritten von 180°. Während der ersten Hälfte hab ich die Linse mit meiner Mütze abgedeckt, dann die Kamera gedreht und alles offen gelassen. Deshalb sieh man einige Details des Kopfsteinpflasters im Vordergrund, die mit dem zweiten Himmel verschmelzen. Meine Kamera war auf ISO 800, und das LAOWA Zero D 12mm-Objektiv war, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, auf F11 eingestellt.

The Kitchen quarters

So the kitchen quarters look amazing. Why? because the King said it has to look also impressive when I look out of the windows of the Palace. He had like a photographer's mind. I am not climbing the Matterhorn, I climb the mountain across to see the Matterhorn.

Anyhow, I created a few camera rotations here.

Die Küchenquartiere sehen unglaublich aus. Warum nur? Weil der König meinte, es müsse auch beeindruckend aussehen, wenn ich aus den Fenstern des Palastes schaue. Er hatte so etwas wie den Verstand eines Fotografen. Ich klettere nicht auf das Matterhorn, ich klettere den Berg gegenüber, um das Matterhorn zu sehen. Wie auch immer, ich habe hier ein paar Rotationen gemacht.

If you have a closer look at these two shots you realize that the only real difference here is my lens capping. The zooming with the lens was always performed during the second part of my rotation (seen on the bottom part of the photo). The difference in the shots is that for the first part, I left the lens covered during the rotation so as not to get the light trails in the first part of the exposure. And then I leave it open for the entire process.

Wenn du dir diese beiden Aufnahmen genauer ansiehst, merkst du, dass der einzige wirkliche Unterschied hier Objektivabdeckung ist. Das Zoomen mit dem Objektiv wurde immer während des zweiten Teils meiner Rotation durchgeführt. Der Unterschied in den Aufnahmen besteht darin, dass ich für den ersten Teil das Objektiv abgedeckt habe, um keine Lichtspuren im ersten Teil der Belichtung zu bekommen.

Turn around one more time.

This is the center of the Kitchenquarter "arrangement" that is opposite of the New Palace. since there are so many lights you get to see all the Light Trails when you leave the lens open during the rotation. When done by hand you see the slides gitter and shaking.

Das ist der Mittelteil des Küchenquartiers "Arrangements", das gegenüber dem Neuen Palais liegt. Da es so viele Lichter gibt, siehst du alle Lichtspuren, wenn du die Linse während der Rotation offen lässt. Wenn man es von Hand macht, sieht man das Gitter und das Zittern der Aufnahmen.

Camera Rotation, what?

You've seen it in a bunch of my posts. Camera Rotation YES. Exactly what it says: I spin the camera while the shutter of my camera is open. Sometimes I do it step by step, other times I go for a smooth, continuous rotation. And yeah, while I'm at it, I also throw some light on the scene.

Prinzip Kamera Rotation Light Painting?

Wie in Ihr schon in einigen meiner vorrangegangenen Posts gesehen habt, ist Kamera Rotation genau was der Name meint. Ich drehe die Kamera einfach während der Belichtung und dabei wird das Subjekt bei jedem Schritt zusätzlich noch ausgeleuchtet.
