Ksar Hadada is a village in south east of Tunisia, if you are doing a lap of the country like we were, you have come across from the inland deserts and you are heading towards the sea, sort of one your way home.
It's a small village, only 1,200 odd people live here. Ksar essentially means fortified village or town, so like old towns in Europe it's small, and surrounded by walls, but it's also organic in a way that the strructures of Europe are not.
Because this is Tunisia of course George Lucas and his Star Wars crew have been here, this time for The Phantom Menance, this standing in for Mos Espa, where young Anankin lived. Also this is in the larger government region of Tataouine - do you see what George did there, he's may not be so much a genius as a dude who is co-opting Tunisia.
But we are talking about the Mosque today, which looks so imposing looming over the village, the stark clean colours and amazing tile work make it stand out - by the way it was built in 1950's The silver dome in the desert sun, and yeah it was well into the 40's (degrees celisus) when we were there, feels almost space age.
