Galle Fort Of Srilanka (Part 3)

Hello everyone,
I told you in the previous blog that I will bring the blog I prepared about Galle Fort in parts. Below is another part of it. I have already published the first and second parts of this. My apologies that I don't have enough hive power to post a large blog at once.

This is the first Roman Catholic church built in Sri Lanka. This church is also built inside the Galle fort. It was built in 1755.

The church you see in the photo below was completed in 1871.

I was also able to photograph how it looks at night.

Although this clock tower is said to be the most valuable jewel of Galle Fort, there is no mistake about it.

I will give you a brief description of this clock tower.

Erected in 1883 upon the moon bastion, in honour of Dr. Peter Daniel Anthonisz (1822 - 1903) this 25.3m tall stone-built clock tower is an iconic feature of Galle city. A resident of the middle street, Galle fort, Dr. Anthonisz was a member of the Galle municipal council, representing the Dutch burgher community. He also served as the personal physician to British governor William Gregory. The clock tower was constructed by the Public Works Department under the direction of an engineer Henry John Deslargas, with funds donated by the people of Galle in appreciation of Dr. Anthonisz's valuable public service. Bought from Morrisons Company in London, the clock proper was donated by Mudaliyar Samson d' Abrew Rajapakse of Mahakappinna Walauwa at Balapitiya. Prior to the construction of this clock tower, the belfry erected by the Dutch existed in this location. It was removed by the British in 1879, making way for the construction of the clock tower.

Please note that I have the right to the article and photos.

I don't have enough hive power to post the whole post so stay tuned for the rest in the next blog. Sorry.

Thank you
