
In the winter of 2018 Ryan took this photo in Prince George, British Columbia. The photo then started being used in a heap of news articles (with no royalties, of course), and here is why:
This photo is of an atmospheric phenomenon call STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement - the red beam you can see shooting through the sky). This natural light show is extremely rare and is only new to science. It was originally thought that STEVE was a new type of aurora but research suggests that it is a completely new type of atmospheric phenomenon.
