This is my entry on blue photography, #thaiphotocontest82 hosted by @thaiteam. Blue is my favourite colour since my childhood; I used to watch the sky for hours at my grandmother’s house. I was the only child in the house surrounded by adults. So, I spent most of the time in the kitchen with a large opening into the sky. I often slept on the cool kitchen floor watching clouds against the blue sky. That’s where my imagination began to run wild; the blue sky opened up another world of reality to me. Then, I grew up and lost touch with the old house and my grandmother. It was not easy when my mother didn’t get along with my dear grandmother, life is always full of unexpected turns.
Blue photography brings back both fond and painful memories. But ‘the show must go on!’, life demands that we survive each day to the best of our ability, with laughters and tears. I found my comfort zone in an old Chinese community near the river. That’s where the first road was constructed just over a hundred years ago. We had to thank those foreigners and diplomatic communities in Bangkok who petitioned King Rama V for a proper road for riding horses and carriages. The earthen roads were perfect for bare-foot Siamese in the old days, most roads were narrow and flanked by bushes and overgrown trees. Westerners could not trot their horses through the soft muddy roads, carriages would get stuck and carriage-jam would be the norm. Those Siamese people traveled by rowing boats and on foot. Elephants and horses were for formal processions, royal ceremonies and going to war. This road is called New Road by those happy expats who enjoyed their horse galloping sessions and friendly carriage race along the road. The local Siamese were quite stunned by those Westerners in formal long dresses and black suits making noises and strange expressions on horse backs. Most Thai men didn’t wear shirts in those days, they would carry a piece of cloth which could be used like a shawl, tie at the waist like a belt.
Some of the old shop-houses built during the reign of King Rama V had been transformed into new office blocks, shopping mall and condominiums. Luckily, the majority of two-floor houses still survive the period of modernisation of Thailand in the 1980s. This district is called Bangrak which originally was the hub of all foreign companies, luxurious shops selling imported goods from England and Europe, the best restaurants, jewelry shops, embassies and banks.
The oldest and best Catholic schools were established just behind the main road. The rich middle class families would send their children to these prestigious schools so they would have proper English lessons. We were very lucky to be able to get into these schools as there was a long waiting list. So, this was probably why I found myself being drawn back to this district after I returned home from overseas.
The surroundings have been vastly changed and things have become more shiny and modern. The naturally care-free of non-interference atmosphere had somehow disappeared from around those old schools. Things have become more structured and organised; so the sense of freedom has diminished. I became more drawn towards the old road and the old houses with elderly people who have been living there for at least two generations. So, on a sunny day, I would walk along this road and explore the side alleys looking for old shops selling sweets and cakes at incredibly cheap prices. I would take photos of the houses and traffic as records of my visit. I know these houses might disappear one day, just like my grandmother, so I have to keep something to remind me of my happy memories.
เราชอบไปเดินเล่นแถวถนนเจริญกรุงที่บางรัก ที่นั่นมีความทรงจำในวัยเด็กของเราที่เราลืมไปนานมาก แต่มีอะไรบางอย่างเรียกให้เรากลับไปถิ่นเก่าแก่ที่นั่น ถนนนี้เป็นถนนสายแรกที่สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 โดยชาวต่างชาติและชุมชนฑูตต่างชาติได้รวมตัวกัน ขอให้มีการสร้างถนนเพื่อให้พวกเขามีที่ขี่ม้าออกกำลังกาย และมีที่ขับรถม้าเที่ยวเล่นบ้าง เพราะถนนในเมืองเป็นถนนดินจึงมีโคลนตมและแคบมาก ไม่เหมาะสำหรับการขี่ม้าเพื่อการออกกำลังกาย และการขับรถม้าเพื่อสันทนาการ เราจึงมีการสร้างถนนอย่างมากมายหลายสายในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 การเดินทางของชาวกรุงก็เริ่มเปลี่ยนจากการพายเรือ และการเดินเท้ามาเป็นรถม้า และต่อมาเป็นรถยนต์นั่นเอง
ดังนั้นถิ่นนี้จึงมีความเจริญและทันสมัยที่สุดในสมัยนั้น ตามถนนเจริญกรุงจะมีห้างร้านขายของนำเข้าจากยุโรป มีร้านขายเสื้อผ้าของประดับราคาแพง ของใช้ในบ้านแพงๆ มีร้านอาหารชั้นยอด มีธนาคารและห้างร้านเต็มไปหมด นับว่าเป็นแหล่งเดินเที่ยวและช็อปปิ้งของคนรวยในสมัยนั้น สถานฑูตที่สำคัญก็อยู่ในระแวกนั้น ยังมีโรงเรียนคาทอลิกที่เก่าแก่สามแห่งอยู่หลังถนนเจริญกรุงด้วย เราก็ได้เรียนที่นั่นและมีความทรงจำหลากหลายที่นั่น เรากลับไปเดินดูโรงเรียนเก่าของเรา ก็เห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงในทางวัตถุมากจนเราคิดว่า บรรยากาศสบายๆแบบเดิมหายไปหมด เราก็เลยชอบไปเดินดูบรรยากาศบ้านของชุมชนคนจีนที่อยู่ในตรอกเล็กๆแถวบางรักมากกว่า
ตึกเหล่านี้แข็งแรงมาก เพราะสร้างด้วยอิฐขนาดใหญ่สองชั้น และใช้ไม้สักเป็นคานทั้งต้น ตึกบางส่วนถูกเปลี่ยนเป็นอาคารสำนักงาน ห้างสรรพสินค้าและตึกคอนโดมิเนียม โชคดีที่ส่วนใหญ่ยังคงสภาพเดิม และยังมีคนจีนโบราณอยู่ในบ้านเหล่านั้นมาอย่างน้อยสองชั่วอายุคน เราชอบถ่าขถนนและบ้านเก่าเหล่านี้เก็บไว้เป็นความทรงจำดีๆของเรา เพราะเรารู้ว่าทุกอย่างไม่แน่นอน การเปลี่ยนแปลงอาจจะเกิดขึ้นได้โดยไม่คาดคิด ดังนั้นสีฟ้าจึงมีความหมายกับเรามาก เราโตมากับการนั่งมองเมฆบนท้องห้าสีฟ้า วันที่อดดออกท้องฟ้าสีห้าสเใสจะเป็นวัน ที่เรามีความสุขใจและอยากออกไปเดินถ่ายรูปเล่น ในสถานที่เดิมๆที่มีความทรงจำในวัยเด็กที่เราชอบมากและ อยากย้อนเวลากลับไปอีกครั้ง
