Gathering at the Feeder

in Photography Lovers3 years ago

It used to be a new bird feeder. Now it seems it is up for grabs. After 2 feet of snow this weekend, it seems the Deer and Squirrel are both making a claim for the feeder in addition to the birds. @melinda010100, you were right that the other animals would come soon after the birds! Even though the snow is melting away quickly, I'm sure not much available the last 2 days that's not buried.

The deer and squirrel exchanged with each other for several minutes. I was able to get several shots, but these were my favs.

In this one, they seemed to have come to an agreement that they could share. The birds did not care for this arrangement very much though.

Funny to see the Deer sticking his tongue out to lick the seeds from the feeder.

And just a couple other nicely posed shots from this kind buck.

Lol, not sure if you mean me or the birds. The birds were not interrupted for long, they waited not so patiently in the nearby scrub oaks and quickly were back on the spot when the Deer left. They don't mind the squirrel so much, but did not like the deer bumping and licking their feed spot!

Hey @ksteem, here is a little bit of BEER from @pixresteemer for you. Enjoy it!

Yep! You need to begin ordering birdseed by the truckload!
Really great captures with the buck and squirrel! I've seen the deer using their tongue to lap up seed. It is funny to watch.

Yes, that squirrel did not give up his favored feeding ground easily! Was fun to watch and listen to him scolding the deer! However, the deer was not impressed.

That zoom lens sure comes in handy.

Yes, loving the larger lens for sure.

Haha! Guess I did leave that wide open for interpretation and yes, I was referring to the birds. Your timing was perfect to capture the standoff interaction and eventual compromise between the buck and squirrel - nicely done! Wonder how long it'll be before you spot chipmunks, raccoons and other random wildlife at the feeder.

This last snowstorm sure was a doozy! Hope you were ready for it and have plenty of birdseeds @ksteem😀

I'm sure the raccoons will find it soon enough, we've had lots of problems with them getting into the back porch cat door and stealing food. Maybe this will draw them away.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Thank you!

Beautiful buck, he's hungry too 🤣

Yes, didn't seem to mind me much, even when making noises at the window.

🤣 🤣 🤣

Now you started something ... Wait till the Bears show up ...

Yes, I'm sure we'll see some. They supposedly start coming out of hibernation Mid-March thru May in Colorado, are active thru summer, then go back into hibernation in November. Most active times around people are when they are hungry, just after hibernation and the month before hibernation. I'm looking forward to it, my wife not so much, lol.

Well, they sure make for some great photos @ksteem! I love that you got both the squirrel and the deer in a couple of photos together and that deer licking out the seeds is something to see! Are you going to put the same seed in or try different ones? I just bought a new bird feeder but will stick with the safflower here. 🙂

Haven't decided on the seed yet. I bought another bag of this mix. I had bought an additional bag of black sunflower seed to augment, but it was never delivered, and then the order cancelled without explanation. I'll be doing some additional research to see what other options to use. I would really like to attract some cardinals, which are pretty few and far between up here.

I can say for sure that the Cardinals here love the safflower. So do the Finches, Sparrows, Black-capped Chickadees and the Woodpeckers seemed to like it although I only saw them at the feeders once. We have Starlings in abundance here and they don't care for it thank goodness. The Chickadees are funny as they so small and would take one seed and fly off to a branch to crack it open between their feet. I took some photos and had a good time watching them. 💖

Yes, we have the finches, sparrows, and chickadees here already. As you said they seem to be constantly flitting about and hard to catch a good pic of them! I think there is some safflower in my mix, but not sure. Whatever it is the finches and chickadees here seem to like it so far, they are the most frequent visitors. Got some nice doves this week too, will post the pics later this week when pull them off.

Wow he is handsome deer. And the feeder is a nice restaurant for wild animals now. Come on, guys come to enjoy the food and pay by a nice post. Great idea! 😍

Awesome, I mean it turned into a multi feeder lol your pictures turned out spectacular they look very sharp, thank you @ksteem for sharing these beautiful captures.

lol, yes a multi-feeder, I like that! Thanks!

When the snow disappears you must change your strategy.

Oh!! Strange bedfellows vying for the feeder!

@ksteem has enough for everyone!! That's hilarious. :))

Yes, it was great fun watching that squirrel cussing the deer..
