I don't have a clue why they would burn the lake, so I will go with your idea if making it more habitable for the fish.

Good question and I am not sure but I have a feeling they do, no plants are grown here as fas as I could see from the past year, but if they were growing something, it could be rice, but just too risky near the lake.
